Culinary neighbourhood festival in Bielefeld North
Schildesche kulinarisch has been organized for many years by the network of associations InSchildesche e.V. and is one of the established neighbourhood festivals in Bielefeld North. The venue is the Kirchplatz Schildesche — the historic centre of the former village of Schildesche, which has long since become a district of Bielefeld and retains its village charm around the St. Marien collegiate church.
The event is explicitly focused on diversity at one table: guests should be able to taste many different dishes together at one table. The offerings range from Westphalian classics like Reibekuchen and crispy steakhouse fries to burgers and Pulled Pork, as well as Tacos and barbecue specialties. Local restaurants, butchers, and specialty vendors participate; the spectrum is explicitly international without abandoning the Westphalian core.
Accompanying the food: a selection of wines, strawberry punch, Bavarian draft beer, and Italian ice cream with espresso specialties. The mix matches the objective — Volksfest (folk festival) atmosphere meets gourmet dining meets neighbourhood coziness.
Live music accompanies the event on both evenings. Children's program: bouncy castle and face painting. The Hedwig-Dornbusch-Schule opens its doors for an open day, including a flea market on Thursday — a connection that integrates the festival with school and neighbourhood life.
The organizer is InSchildesche e.V., an association based at Westerfeldstraße 10 in Schildesche. The association is committed to the enhancement of the district, organizes other events throughout the year, and is a typical example of the strong local association structure that supports neighbourhood festivals in Westphalian Bielefeld.
Schildesche is located in the north of Bielefeld, an independent city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the centre of Ostwestfalen-Lippe. With a good 18,000 inhabitants, Schildesche, along with Heepen and Stieghorst, forms the rural north of the large city. Schildesche kulinarisch is one of the formats that make this district with its own identity visible.
The 2026 neighbourhood festival runs for two days around the Kirchplatz Schildesche. Wednesday evening from 5 PM to 12 AM and Thursday from 11 AM to 7 PM — the two hours of the opening evening are traditionally dedicated to the after-work format, while Thursday is for a relaxed daytime visit with families.
Local gastronomy combines Westphalian classics with international street food culture: Reibekuchen, crispy steakhouse fries, burgers, Pulled Pork, Tacos, barbecue specialties. Accompanying drinks: wine selection, strawberry punch, Bavarian draft beer, Italian ice cream, and espresso.
Both evenings are accompanied by live music — the list of acts will be announced by InSchildesche in spring 2026. Children's program with bouncy castle and face painting. Open day at Hedwig-Dornbusch-Schule with a flea market on Thursday.
