Running festival from the Cloverleaf to the Imperial Castle
For years, the Sparkassen Metropolmarathon has connected the two sister cities of Fürth and Nuremberg in a single running route. The motto 'Cloverleaf meets Imperial Castle' – an allusion to Fürth's coat of arms cloverleaf and Nuremberg's Imperial Castle – sums up the idea: a running event that brings the metropolitan region together through sport.
Several distances are available on the event weekend:
The marathon starts at Fürther Freiheit, the central square of the 'Cloverleaf City', and leads through Fürth's city center, along the Pegnitz and Rednitz rivers to Nuremberg. The finish line is the historic Hauptmarkt with the Frauenkirche and the Schöner Brunnen. Along the way, runners pass through both old town settings, large cheering zones with live music, and thousands of spectators.
More than 10,000 participants are expected in 2026, along with around 1,000 helpers. The organizers, led by the Fürth Tourist Information, rely on a volunteer concept including catering, a Puma shirt, and a VGN day ticket for the volunteer course marshals.
Fürth (independent city) and Nuremberg are located directly next to each other in the administrative region of Middle Franconia (Bavaria) and, together with Erlangen and Schwabach, form the core of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region – one of Bavaria's economically strongest regions. The Metropolmarathon is the sporting symbol of this connection.
The Sparkassen Metropolmarathon 2026 takes place on Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, 2026. By the end of January, around 3,333 people had already registered for the Sunday races alone – over 700 more than the previous year.
On Saturday, the Pillenstein Kids Marathon opens the weekend. On Sunday, the Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10-Kilometer Run, Youth Marathon, and – as a new feature in 2026 – the Nordic Walking race on the 10-kilometer course will start. The start for all Sunday races is Fürther Freiheit, and the finish is the historic Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg.
Registrations are possible online at metropolmarathon.de until May 31, 2026. Late registrations on race day will only be accepted as long as starting places remain available.
