A Weekend, Forty Studios

The Gastspiel — Fürther Atelier-Wochenende is the annual inventory of visual arts in the 'Kleeblattstadt'. On one Saturday and Sunday in October, around forty artist studios open their doors — free of charge and without registration. Visitors go directly to the artists: see works in progress, ask about techniques, materials, and inspiration, buy, discuss.

The Spectrum of Visual Arts

All branches of contemporary visual art are represented: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, sound art, photography, animation — occasionally supplemented by musical performances. More than 100 artists participate in the latest edition; some show in individual studios, others share communal spaces.

A City Walk Through Fürth

The studios are spread throughout the city — in old backyards of Gustavstraße, in former factory buildings, in artists' houses along Hornschuchpromenade, in the Südstadt, in barns. 'Gastspiel' is therefore also a walk through Fürth beyond the main thoroughfares — a city portrait, drawn from the perspective of its art scene. Kulturring C — The Organizing Association

The 'Gastspiel' is organized by Kulturring C, the association for the promotion of visual arts in Fürth. Kulturring C also functions as a point of contact and lobby for Fürth's artists outside of the studio weekend — curating exhibitions, facilitating studio spaces, representing the sector to the city.

Middle Franconia and the Studio Concept

Studio weekends are a widespread form of art mediation in Germany — Berlin, Cologne, and Leipzig have their own major formats. In the state of Bavaria, in the administrative district of Middle Franconia, the Fürth 'Gastspiel' is the most important event of its kind: low-threshold, free of charge, without the commercialism of large art fairs — art directly at the place of its creation.
