The detailed program for 2026, including the lineup of live bands and the program points at the "Market of Opportunities," will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on sommerspektakel-heidelberg.de.

Over 40 Years of Participatory Culture
When Heidelberg thinks of major festivals, most people first think of the Castle Festival and the Stückemarkt Festival – and often forget the festival born in the Weststadt in the summer of 1984: the Sommerspektakel. What began as an initiative of the West-Heidelberg neighborhood association is now one of the oldest neighborhood festivals in Baden-Württemberg and a model for participatory neighborhood culture. "Participation is the magic word," emphasize the organizers – and for over 40 years, volunteers have been available for setup and takedown, catering, and programming, in exchange for food vouchers and a good feeling.
Three Days at Wilhelmsplatz
The venue is the central Wilhelmsplatz in Heidelberg's Weststadt – an urban square with Wilhelminian-era buildings, which transforms into a festival mile for three days. In the large circus tent, live bands from the region and national acts perform on all three festival days – from folk and singer-songwriter to indie and reggae to dance music. There is also a flea market for children, various children's activities, and on Sunday, a communal neighborhood breakfast right in the square – a Heidelberg summer tradition that is rarely found anywhere else in this form.
Market of Opportunities
A hallmark of the Sommerspektakel is the Market of Opportunities, which takes place on Sunday. Here, Heidelberg's citizen initiatives, social associations, environmental groups, and cultural organizations present their work. It is a neighborhood assembly in the best sense: Anyone who wants to get involved in the Weststadt can find contacts here. Those who simply want to see what's happening between Czernyring and Eppelheimer Straße get an overview of the local civil society.
Heidelberg-Weststadt — Wilhelminian-era Quarter with Identity
The Weststadt is one of the most beautiful Wilhelminian-era quarters in southern Germany – with five-story rows of houses, front gardens, and a dense network of shops offering everything from bakeries to bookstores. Heidelberg itself, located in the Rhine-Neckar district of Baden-Württemberg, is internationally famous for its university, castle, and old town. The Sommerspektakel shows a different side: lived neighborhood life outside the tourist routes. Anyone who wants to experience Heidelberg beyond the castle should come to Wilhelmsplatz on the last weekend of June.
