Heidelberg-Weststadt — Wilhelminian Era and Students

The Weststadt is one of Heidelberg's largest and most popular districts (Heidelberg city district, Baden-Württemberg state) — developed during the Wilhelminian era from 1880 onwards, featuring elegant four- to five-storey buildings, wide streets, magnificent facades, and numerous cafés and wine bars. Students from the Ruprecht Karl University live here alongside established bourgeois families, scientists, and creatives. The heart of the district is Wilhelmsplatz — an elongated square with a park and fountain, lined with Wilhelminian-era residential buildings.

Neighbourhood Festival with Weck, Wurscht und Wein

The Weststadtfest is the annual meeting festival organised by the West-Heidelberg neighbourhood association (West-Heidelberg e.V.). For three days in September, the association and participating groups transform Wilhelmsplatz into a festival ground with:

• Stage programme featuring local bands and the festival band KIST (or a comparable act in 2026, to be announced before the festival)
• Food stalls offering typical Heidelberg festival fare: Weck, Wurscht und Wein (rolls, sausages, and Württemberg wine)
• Ecumenical family service on Sunday morning
• Family programme: Balloon artist, face painting, ice cream vendor Frau Bolle, puppet theatre on Sunday afternoon
• Bicycle coding and e-bike promotions by the police and ADFC (German Cyclists' Club)
• Heidelberg fire brigade demonstrations for children

Three Days of Festivities in September

The Weststadtfest traditionally takes place on the second or third weekend of September, competing with other Heidelberg neighbourhood festivals:

• Fri, September 11, 2026 — cosy get-together on Wilhelmsplatz from 7:30 PM
• Sat, September 12, 2026 — sales start at 5:00 PM, keg tapping at 6:00 PM, live concert around 8:00 PM
• Sun, September 13, 2026 — ecumenical service at 10:30 AM, full day of activities until late afternoon, puppet theatre at 3:00 PM

In the Context of Heidelberg's Neighbourhood Festivals

Heidelberg boasts a remarkably dense festival culture. In September, alongside or shortly after each other, the following take place: Hendsemer Kerwe (Handschuhsheim), Rohrbacher Kerwe, Fischerfest Neuenheim, Kirchheimer Kerwe, and Neckarfest Wieblingen. The Weststadtfest is the most urban among these — not a traditional folk festival (Volksfest) in its style, but rather a gathering for a style-conscious residential area.
