Three days of flea market, arts and crafts, and a summer street festival in Essen's liveliest district
The Sommermarkt im Südviertel is one of Essen's most charming summer street festivals — not an industrial festival, but a grown neighborhood festival, supported by the local Interessengemeinschaft Süd e.V. and Kaufhaus Süd. In 2026, the market will run from Saturday, July 11 to Monday, July 13, 2026, in the streets between Witteringstraße and Schornstraße, in the heart of Essen's liveliest district.
The format combines two concepts: on one hand, a street flea market where residents offer their treasures, vintage finds, and household clear-outs from their doorsteps — on the other hand, curated craft stalls with regional arts and crafts, jewelry, ceramics, and textiles. This creates a mix of flea market and creative market, interesting for bargain hunters as well as design seekers.
Several stalls will serve cocktails (Aperol Spritz, Hugo, Caipirinha, Mojito), cold beer, and non-alcoholic summer drinks. In addition, there will be a diverse street food offering with burgers, crêpes, wood-fired pizza, vegetarian-vegan options, and sweet specialties — provided by local restaurateurs and mobile vendors.
The musical highlight is on Saturday evening (July 12): live bands from the Ruhr area will perform on the main stage — typically indie rock, funk, soul, and jazz crossover. The exact acts will be announced in the weeks leading up to the festival on kaufhaussued.com and on the Facebook channels of the Interessengemeinschaft.
A dedicated children's program is set up in the small parking lot opposite bildwerkeins — with play activities, face painting, creative workshops, and space to run around. Additionally, the ifm stand presents information about apprenticeship positions — the Essen-based industrial company ifm electronic is one of the market's sponsors and also uses the format for talent acquisition. Kaufhaus Süd offers an information stand about its activities and collaborations with local businesses.
Essen's Südviertel has been known for years as Essen's most creative and gastronomically dense district — a mix of Wilhelminian-era old buildings, small bars, design shops, galleries, and cafés. Students, freelancers, young families, and artists live here. The Sommermarkt is an expression of this neighborhood identity: not imposed from above, but supported and programmed by the neighborhood itself.
Three days of Sommermarkt in Essen's liveliest district — residents' street flea market meets curated artisan stalls. Cocktails, beer, street food, and live music on Saturday evening characterize the weekend. A family program opposite bildwerkeins, the ifm apprenticeship stand, and Kaufhaus Süd information complement the offerings.
The format is not industrial but has grown organically — supported by the neighborhood itself and the Interessengemeinschaft Süd e.V. This is precisely what makes its charm: no mass-produced goods, but genuine neighborhood spirit in one of Essen's most beautiful Wilhelminian-era streets.
Free admission. Payment per stall for flea market finds, crafts, and food at typical neighborhood festival prices.
Südviertel is directly south of Essen's main train station, a 10-minute walk. Accessible by subway (U11 Berliner Platz) or tram. Parking in surrounding streets is severely restricted on weekends — public transport or cycling recommended.
