The Mecca of the Analog Gaming World
When the gaming industry travels to Essen every October, it's clear: it's time for SPIEL — International Game Days. What began in 1983 as a small industry gathering with a handful of publishers has become the world's largest public exhibition for board, card, and tabletop games. Over 220,000 visitors from more than 40 nations, 1,200 exhibitors from 50 countries, and thousands of tables for trying out games make Messe Essen a pilgrimage site for every board game enthusiast for four days.
What Makes SPIEL Unique: Play Instead of Just Watching
Unlike traditional trade fairs, SPIEL is an active, participatory event: at the booths, you can — and should! — try out every game yourself. Publisher representatives and even the game authors themselves will explain the rules, sit at the table with you, and play. If you want to know if a game is suitable for the family or only works within the 'geek bubble,' you can test it on-site. This is the DNA of SPIEL and the reason why the event spans four days and attracts 220,000 visitors.
Deutscher Spielepreis and innoSPIEL
The most important industry awards are presented at SPIEL. The Deutscher Spielepreis, based on a public vote, is considered Germany's most prestigious board game award alongside the "Spiel des Jahres." The innoSPIEL Innovation Award recognizes innovative game mechanics and creative publishing achievements. Both awards shape the industry and regularly lead to bestsellers.
Halls 1 to 8 — An Organized World of Games
The exhibition spans all halls of Messe Essen. Hall 1 traditionally features the major German publishers (Kosmos, Pegasus, Asmodee, Ravensburger), Hall 3 is for family and children's games, Hall 4 for role-playing and miniature games, Hall 5 for international publishers, Hall 6 for crowdfunded and indie games, and Hall 7 for collectible card and tabletop competitions. The hall layout changes annually — the current hall plan will be available from August 2026 on spiel-essen.de.
Opening Hours and Tickets
From Thursday to Saturday (October 22–24, 2026), the exhibition is open from 10 AM to 7 PM, and on Sunday (October 25), from 10 AM to 6 PM. Day tickets for adults in 2025 ranged between €22.50 (Early Bird) and €23.50 (regular); family passes and discounts for students, people with disabilities, and cosplayers are available. Online advance ticket sales for 2026 will begin in summer 2026 on the exhibition website. Trying out games is included in the ticket, as is access to all halls and program events.
