Family festival in the Christinenpark behind the Villa Rü — sports activities, children's stage and neighbourhood vibe, Saturday 5 July 2026
The Rüttenscheider Parkfest has been the big summer party of Essen's Rüttenscheid district for 23 years — and at the same time one of the most charming neighbourhood festivals in the entire Ruhr area. Unlike the region's large city festivals, the Parkfest focuses on families, children and neighbourhood character: no beer tent, no loud open-air stage, but a park, a children's stage, sports and creative stations — and the warm atmosphere of a district where artists, restaurateurs, families and residents know each other and celebrate together.
The highlight of the festival is the children's stage, where Rüttenscheid's kindergartens and schools perform in turn over several hours: dance groups, choirs, theatre pieces, body percussion. The performances are short, energetic and heartfelt — attended by the families of the performers and warmly applauded by the rest of the audience.
Across the park, hands-on stations are spread out: obstacle courses, climbing frames, Bobbycar races, bouncy castle area, face-painting station, crafts (drawing and crafting corners), water games. The stations are run by the Villa Rü and local partners (Diakonie, AWO day-care centres, local sports clubs).
A special feature of the festival: the fairy-tale tent by the Zentrum 60+, where volunteers from the senior citizens' initiative read both classic and modern fairy tales — a cross-generational encounter that perfectly embodies Rüttenscheid's neighbourhood feel.
The stalls in the park offer family-friendly food: Bratwurst, crêpes, cakes, lemonade, coffee, vegetarian options. The Miamamia café (a Rüttenscheid institution) is there with its own stall. Diakonie and Villa Rü support the catering offer.
The festival is organised by IG Rüttenscheid (Rüttenscheid trade association), in cooperation with the Villa Rü, the district's central family and meeting centre. Other partners: AWO Girardethaus day-care centres, the Kinderhut and Gruga kindergartens, Käthe-Kollwitz school, Diakonie, Zentrum 60+, Miamamia café.
Rüttenscheid is one of the densest, liveliest and culturally most engaged districts of Essen — known for its Rüttenscheider Straße ("Rü") with cafés, restaurants, bars and small shops. Once a year, the Parkfest gives the district a day in which families, children and seniors take centre stage — a welcome contrast to the hectic everyday life of the "Rü".
The 2026 Parkfest runs on 5 July 2026 from 14:00 in the Christinenpark behind the Villa Rü. In bad weather it moves into the inner courtyard of the Villa Rü.
Free admission. Food and drink directly at the stall.
