Franconian Wine Festival on Maxplatz over the Whitsun weekend
Bamberg is famous for its beer, its smoked beer, its breweries. It is all the more unusual that the UNESCO World Heritage city in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg is dedicated to Franconian wine once a year. The Bamberg Wine Festival on the Whitsun weekend has been a fixture in the city's event calendar since 2011 – the 15th edition will take place in 2026.
The organizers are Stadtmarketing Bamberg e.V. and Zametzer & Krohn GbR. Four Franconian wineries personally present their current vintages on-site:
In addition, there is a local Silvaner from the Stiftsgarten am Michaelsberg – Bamberg's answer to Franconian wine, straight from the monastery vineyard above the city.
The menu ranges from fish specialties to tarte flambée and Franconian classics – wine pairings instead of a beer stronghold. Every evening, a different live band takes over the small stage in the center of Maxplatz: Schlager, Oldies, Pop, Classics. Sipping and swaying are explicitly encouraged.
Maxplatz is located in the center of Bamberg's Old Town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Visitors to the wine festival can combine their visit with a stroll through the island city, a visit to Bamberg Cathedral, or a guided tour of the cathedral. Immediately following the wine festival, the season of Bamberg's beer gardens begins – the perfect bridge between the two Bamberg worlds.
The 15th edition of the Bamberg Wine Festival opens on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 6:30 PM with the official opening by Franconian Wine Queen Angelina Seiler. Until Monday, May 25, 2026, Maxplatz will once again transform into a Franconian wine garden.
As in previous years, four wineries from Mainfranken will personally present their current vintages – Behringer, Biegner, Goger, and Schmitt. They are joined by Bamberg's Silvaner from the Stiftsgarten am Michaelsberg. The gastronomic offerings range from fish specialties to tarte flambée.
The live bands on the stage in the center of the square change daily. Highlights: Saturday evening a Peter Maffay cover band, Sunday evening Rock'n'Roll with The Wild Bobbin Baboons from Koblenz, who have been performing for over 25 years.
Free admission. Glasses of wine, food, and drinks are paid for directly at the stands. Prices are in line with typical Franconian wine festival prices (glass of wine from approx. €4–5).
