Brandenburg an der Havel — City of Artists Between Three Islands
Brandenburg an der Havel, with just under 73,000 inhabitants, is one of Brandenburg's three independent cities and gives the federal state its name. The old town is spread across three islands in the Havel river — Altstadt, Neustadt, and Dominsel — connected by numerous bridges. In the last two decades, a vibrant art scene has established itself: painters, sculptors, ceramicists, and photographers have set up studios in old courtyards, warehouses, and workshops in the city center. This very scene becomes visible once a year — during the Open Studios days.
26th Edition on the First May Weekend
The 26th edition of the Open Studios days will take place on Saturday, May 2nd, and Sunday, May 3rd, 2026. The format has been established since 2000: Artists — both professionals and dedicated amateurs — open their workshops, show current works, provide insights into techniques and materials, and offer works for sale. Visitors can visit a dozen to two dozen studios in the city area over a weekend — a showcase on an urban scale.
Broad Spectrum of Fine Arts
The Cultural Office of the City of Brandenburg explicitly invites every form of artistic expression: painting, graphics, sculpture, ceramics, photography, media art, design, crafts, and interdisciplinary projects. This programmatic openness makes the days a cross-section of the city's contemporary art practice — and gives emerging artists the same access as established players.
Participate, Try, Buy
The concept of the days is more than just a mere exhibition. Many artists offer demonstrations of their techniques — pottery wheel for the ceramicist, printing press for the graphic artist, kiln work for the sculptors. Trying things out is possible at many stations, an attraction especially for children. And buying directly from the artist — from small prints to large sculptures. A special form of art education that the Cultural Office programmatically supports.
Free Admission, Registration by January
Admission to all participating studios is free. A map with the locations will be issued by the Cultural Office and will be available online and in print in April. Artists wishing to participate had to register with the Cultural Office by January 17, 2026 — digitally or by mail to Klosterstraße 14, 14770 Brandenburg an der Havel. The event is part of the Havel city's annual cultural highlight and is an important signal to the outside world that Brandenburg an der Havel is more than just an industrial location.
