Kimiko — How the Campus Became a Festival
The Kimiko Festival was initiated by students of RWTH Aachen, as a joint project with the Aachen cultural organization Bluebird and with support from the university. The idea: a festival that doesn't take place on a green field, but right in the middle of the university campus — the RWTH Campus Melaten, where research institutes, start-up incubators, and lecture halls usually shape everyday life. From the first festival weekend a few years ago, an event has grown that now attracts around 5,000 visitors over three days and celebrates its 6th edition in 2026.
Five Stages, Three Days
In 2026, the festival will feature five stages spread across the campus grounds. It opens daily from 1:00 PM until late at night. The musical profile is broad: German rap (OG Keemo, Audio88 & Yassin, OK KID), Pop and Indie classics (Sportfreunde Stiller), Newcomers and Emerging Acts (MilleniumKid, RAUM27, Chapo102, PA69), plus international artists from Sweden, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and Austria, House and Techno producers, and a Hip-Hop stage with young acts.
CCT.square — The Future Hub at the Festival
What sets Kimiko apart from classic festivals is the CCT.square: its own festival zone where companies, start-ups, initiatives, and research projects share their topics with festival visitors. Over 40 organizations will be present in 2026 — including TechAachen, DigitalHUB Aachen, AIESEC, Enactus Aachen, Health for Future. The focus is on sustainability, digitalization, social entrepreneurship, health, climate protection — not advertising booths, but open discussions, interactive formats, and hands-on activities.
Sustainability as a Program
Kimiko has prioritized sustainable festival operations from the very beginning: travel by public transport is actively promoted (Aachen is located in a dense transport network connecting Cologne–Liège–Maastricht), waste management with reusable systems and separation, awareness structures, and a code of conduct are standard. The festival is a non-commercial student project under non-profit sponsorship.
RWTH Campus Melaten — A World of Its Own
The RWTH Campus Melaten is located in western Aachen, about 3 km from the main train station. It concentrates the mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and materials science institutes of RWTH — Germany's third-largest technical university. Visitors to the festival will experience a university landscape that is otherwise rarely accessible to the people of Aachen in their daily lives. The five festival stages, along with food truck areas, chill-out zones, and workshop spaces, are set up in the middle of the campus.
Aachen as a Festival Weekend
Aachen is Germany's westernmost major city — a city between three countries (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands), famous for its Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage, legacy of Charlemagne), the Charlemagne Prize tradition, its student atmosphere, and its Printen (a type of gingerbread) baking culture. Those arriving for Kimiko can extend their weekend: visit the Aachen Cathedral, the Elisenbrunnen, the Carolus Thermen, enjoy an espresso in the market square, or take a trip to Vaals (Netherlands) or Eupen (Belgium).
