Literaturviertel Ruhr — A City District Concept
The Literaturviertel (Literature Quarter) around Akazienallee in Essen is one of Germany's most unusual urban literature concepts: a deliberately curated district where literature is made visible and tangible. The initiator and anchor is Buchhandlung Proust — one of the most famous independent bookstores in the Ruhr area, founded as a meeting point for literary discussion and readings. The Literaturviertelfest is the annual major self-presentation of this district.
Program 2026 — Readings with Five Focus Areas
The program on May 9, 2026, starting at 2 PM, includes readings by:
- Sarah Jäger — author of new texts
- Denis Pfabe — poetry and prose
- David Schraven (CORRECTIV) — investigative journalism and literary reportage
- Miedya Mahmod — voices of young literature
Special program highlight: Norbert Wehr and Jörg Hustiak present unpublished texts from Rolf Dieter Brinkmann's last writing diary — Brinkmann (1940–1975) is considered an important voice in German post-war literature; his last diary will be heard publicly for the first time in Essen.
Conclusion — Ukrainian Authors
The emotional conclusion is a reading of texts by Ukrainian authors: Victoria Amelina (died 2023 in Kramatorsk) and Serhij Zhadan — a deliberate statement of solidarity with Ukrainian literature in the context of the ongoing Russian war of aggression.
Bücherbäume and Buchhandlung Proust
A special feature: visitors can take books for free from the Bücherbäume — installed bookshelves under open acacia trees. Alongside this, discussions with the authors, a visit to Buchhandlung Proust, Turkish buffet, and refreshments.
Organizers
The festival is supported by an alliance of literary institutions: Literarische Gesellschaft Ruhr e.V., Buchhandlung Proust, CORRECTIV (research NGO), Festival Literaturdistrikt, and Literaturbüro Ruhr e.V.. Admission free — in line with the idea of making literature accessible without barriers.
Essen and the Ruhr Area
Essen, with approximately 580,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest cities in the Ruhr area — internationally known as a former Krupp site and the seat of RWE, and distinguished as a cultural hub by the World Heritage site Zeche Zollverein, the Folkwang University of the Arts, and a dense network of theaters, museums, and literary houses. The Literaturviertel around Akazienallee is an example of how literary culture organizes itself beyond a single district.
