77th Essener Lichtwochen — Europe's oldest and largest light show in the city centre from 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027
Essen (approx. 580,000 inhabitants, NRW's sixth-largest city) rose from the ruins after being heavily destroyed in World War II. As early as 1950 — just five years after the end of the war — the business people of Kettwiger Straße initiated a light show to liven up the city centre in the pre-Christmas period and signal economic recovery. This initiative led to the Essener Lichtwochen — one of Europe's oldest and most continuous light events, which will celebrate its 77th edition in 2026.
Unlike typical Christmas illuminations consisting of fairy lights and stars, the Lichtwochen feature large-format, often animated light sculptures. Animal motifs have been the hallmark for decades — giant giraffes, rhinos, polar bears, kangaroos, orcas made from thousands of light bulbs, mounted on steel frames, hung high above Kettwiger Straße. In addition, there are light arches over the pedestrian zones, creating a tunnel effect, and temporary light installations at cultural landmarks such as the Grillo-Theater and on Willy-Brandt-Platz. Motifs are exchanged, supplemented, or re-staged every year — the Lichtwochen are not a static spectacle but an evolving installation.
The 77th Essener Lichtwochen run from 25 October 2026 (Sunday) to 2 January 2027 (Friday) — that's around 70 days of light operation throughout the entire pre-Christmas and Christmas season. The opening is traditionally marked by a fireworks display. The Lichtwochen are open practically 24 hours a day — the installations are permanently mounted, and the lighting runs from late afternoon until late at night.
The organiser is EMG — Essen Marketing GmbH, the official city marketing organisation of the City of Essen. EMG is also responsible for other major Essen events: Essen Original (festival), Light Festival, the Rüttenscheider Carnival parade. The Lichtwochen are EMG's most traditional and touristically significant project — they attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually from the Ruhr region, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as from tour groups from all over Germany.
The Lichtwochen are not just culture but also an economic factor: Essen retailers consider the Lichtwochen season one of the most important sales periods of the year. The city centre as an experiential space is frequented daily for over two months, and restaurants, cafés, and bars benefit from Lichtwochen tourism. Culturally, the Lichtwochen are part of Essen's identity — hardly any resident of Essen doesn't know them from childhood.
For those combining the Lichtwochen with a day trip: the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Museum Folkwang with its Impressionist collection, the Baldeneysee lake, and of course the city centre itself are all reachable within 15 minutes. During the Lichtwochen, the International Essen Christmas Market takes place concurrently on Kennedyplatz with over 70 stalls.
