Ten evenings of light art, installations, and video mapping in Essen's city center — IMAGINE-PEACE project location, October 2nd to 11th, 2026
The Essen Light Festival is one of the most established light festivals in the Ruhr area — and a central highlight of the city's event calendar. Since its premiere in 2017, the festival has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to Essen's city center: international artists transform prominent buildings, squares, parks, and public spaces into three-dimensional light stages. The next edition will take place from Friday, October 2nd to Sunday, October 11th, 2026.
Several international light artists will present their works: light installations, kinetic light sculptures, video mapping projections on historic facades, interactive light shows. Participating artists come from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Great Britain, and Scandinavia — the festival is internationally networked.
The 2026 edition is part of the European project IMAGINE PEACE — an EU co-funded initiative involving five European cities, hosting light art events themed around cultural diversity and sustainability between September 2026 and April 2027. Essen is one of the five partner cities — alongside light festivals in other European metropolises.
The festival is designed as a city stroll: visitors follow a festival route through the city center — from the Marktkirche to Burgplatz, through Kettwiger Straße, to Domplatz, and into the Stadtgarten. The stops are distributed in such a way that a complete tour takes about 90 to 120 minutes — significantly longer with breaks for photos, cafés, and restaurants along the way.
During the festival, cafés, bars, and restaurants extend their opening hours. Mini-lounges with patio heaters, mulled wine stands (appropriate for October), cup concept for sustainable mugs. Essen's gastronomy uses the festival as the kickoff for the autumn season.
With over 580,000 inhabitants, Essen is one of the largest cities in the Ruhr area, known for the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Coal Mine, the Folkwang Museum, the Philharmonie Essen, and its role as European Capital of Culture 2010. The Light Festival is part of this urban cultural program — and one of the reasons why the city is particularly attractive in autumn.
