One of Germany's oldest folk festivals — for over 1,000 years
The Wimpfener Talmarkt in Bad Wimpfen (Heilbronn district, Baden-Württemberg state) is one of Germany's oldest and largest folk festivals. As early as 965, an imperial charter granted Wimpfen market rights — meaning the town will celebrate the 1061st edition of this traditional festival in 2026. Its origins lie in a religious pilgrimage in honor of Saint Peter, which evolved over the centuries into a commercial and entertainment market.
The Talmarkt grounds on Corneliastraße in Wimpfen im Tal unfold four areas of experience during the festival week: a large festival tent with daily music and show programs, an extensive market, which is one of the largest in Germany, a comprehensive trade exhibition of regional companies, and an amusement park with carousels, roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, and stalls for all ages. Amidst bratwurst, candied almonds, cotton candy, and beer, the typical festival atmosphere prevails, delighting the people of Wimpfen and their guests for generations.
The picturesque Staufer town of Bad Wimpfen (around 7,500 inhabitants) lies at the confluence of the Neckar and Jagst rivers, high above the valley on a spur. With its imperial palace, the Red Tower, the Blue Tower, and its perfectly preserved half-timbered streets, it is considered one of the most beautiful old towns in Southern Germany. Wimpfen im Tal — the historic valley part with the significant collegiate church of St. Peter — forms the backdrop for the Talmarkt. The close connection between the town's history and the market festival makes the Talmarkt an authentic, organically grown folk celebration.
The Wimpfener Talmarkt is a family festival with free admission — carousels, game stalls, and live programs on the festival tent stage attract visitors from all over the Heilbronn region and beyond. Those seeking authentic German folk festival atmosphere, far from the mega-events like Oktoberfest, will find it here: traditional, warm, and with a historical depth that is second to none.
From June 25 to 30, 2026, the 1061st edition of the Wimpfener Talmarkt will be held on the Talmarkt grounds on Corneliastraße in Bad Wimpfen-Wimpfen im Tal. Across the extensive area, four festival worlds await you: the large festival tent with daily music programs, the historic market with hundreds of stalls, the regional trade exhibition, and an amusement park with carousels, a roller coaster, and a Ferris wheel. The imperial market charter from 965 makes the Talmarkt one of Germany's oldest documented folk festivals.
Bad Wimpfen is accessible via the A6 motorway (Mannheim–Nuremberg), exit Bad Rappenau. By train, regional trains run hourly on the Heilbronn–Heidelberg line via Bad Wimpfen station, which is located directly at the Talmarkt grounds. Parking and travel recommendation: Train is recommended, as parking at the Talmarkt is limited.
Thursday, June 25 to Tuesday, June 30, 2026, daily. The official program begins on Thursday with the tapping of the first keg; the weekend is the peak time.
Free admission. Rides and refreshments are paid.
Combine your visit to the Talmarkt with a stroll through the historic old town of Wimpfen on the spur — the view from the Blue Tower over the Neckar valley is worth the climb.
