A Marksmen Tradition Since 1853
The Schützenkompanie anno 1853 Meisdorf e.V. is one of the oldest marksmen's associations in the region. Founded in 1853 and re-established in 1992, it currently has around 48 active members. The annual Schützenfest in Meisdorf is one of the most important village festival weekends in the eastern Harz mountains and has been a unifying highlight in the district's annual calendar for generations.
The occasion is classic: the king's shooting, the crowning of the new marksmen's king and queen, the parade through the village, plus three days of stage entertainment, catering, and dancing. All in a village format that preserves tradition while remaining open to guests from neighbouring communities.
Meisdorf in the Harz District
Meisdorf is a district of the town of Falkenstein/Harz, located in the Selketal valley in the eastern part of the Harz mountains — Harz district, state of Saxony-Anhalt. The region is one of the most beautiful parts of the Harz: narrow valleys, castles (Burg Falkenstein within sight), hiking opportunities, and small villages with intact community life. The Selketalbahn (Selke Valley Railway) of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways runs through the valley — Meisdorf is not directly on the route but is easily accessible from Aschersleben or Quedlinburg.
Format and Schedule
The Schützenfest follows the classic three-day choreography:
- Friday evening — Opening at the Schützenplatz with beer service, a small stage program, and disco
- Saturday — King's shooting, parade, stage program, dancing
- Sunday — Morning pint with brass music, family day, crowning of the new marksmen's king
Surroundings
Meisdorf is located in the middle of a hiking tourism region. Burg Falkenstein with the well-known Burg-Falkenstein romance and falconry is only 6 km away. The Selketal valley offers one of the most beautiful hiking landscapes in the Harz. Quedlinburg and Aschersleben are both about 20 km away.
