Four days of Metal and Rock at Ballenstedt Airfield in the Harz Mountains
Rockharz Open Air has been a fixture in the German festival scene since the early 1990s. What began as a small heavy metal gathering has grown into one of the largest open-air festivals of its kind in Central Germany: four days, over 50 bands, two stages, and around 25,000 fans who descend upon Ballenstedt Airfield in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt every year in early July.
The location itself is part of the myth: vast meadows, the Brocken mountain in sight, Ballenstedt Castle not far away. Those familiar with the festival know that the weather in the Harz can be capricious — sun, rain, wind, all in one day. This is precisely what defines Rockharz's character: it's a festival for enthusiasts, not a marketing product. The atmosphere around the campfire, reuniting with the same faces each year, the mix of underground and major headliners — that's Rockharz.
Headliners from the heavy metal canon (Alice Cooper, Helloween, Kreator, Emperor) alternate with death metal, black metal, punk, crossover, hardcore, and folk metal acts. Bands like Paradise Lost, Agnostic Front, Biohazard, Black Label Society, Finntroll, Subway to Sally, and Die Apokalyptischen Reiter showcase the genre's full stylistic breadth. German acts such as Stahlmann, Betontod, and Annisokay also have a firm home here.
Performances take place on the Rock Stage (main stage) and the Dark Stage (second stage). Acts alternate seamlessly, ensuring continuous music from early afternoon until late at night. For families, there's a children's program with the "Heavysaurus" tour, and the "Inklusion – Kultur für Alle" (Inclusion – Culture for All) initiative ensures that people with disabilities can also attend.
As with many metal festivals, camping is a significant part of the experience. Three to four days of tents, campfires, beer, and barbecues — Rockharz thrives on the spirit of its community. Camping was sold out in the first sales phase for 2026, as were the four-day tickets. Those who couldn't get a festival ticket can opt for day tickets starting at €90, but without camping access.
Shuttle buses run between Quedlinburg and Ballenstedt train stations to the festival grounds. The mobile app "ROCKHARZ Kompass" helps with the schedule, site map, and navigation. The festival is conveniently located between Hildesheim and Leipzig, with Quedlinburg being the nearest major train station.
While the festival market in Germany has become more competitive in recent years, Rockharz remains one of the few events true to its roots: metal in all its facets, authentic, without flashy staging. You can feel it on stage, in the audience, at the food stalls, and in the camps. For band members, Rockharz is considered one of the most pleasant festivals in Europe — a relaxed crew, fair treatment, good catering. For fans, it's one of the best weekends of the year.
