Bad Wimpfen's medieval old town as an open art gallery for one night — from 5 PM to midnight with vernissages, readings, Renaissance dances, and fire show with free admission
The Lange KunstNacht Bad Wimpfen is one of the most beautiful cultural nights in Southern Germany — and for a simple reason: it takes place in one of Germany's most complete medieval old towns. On May 2, 2026, the old town will become an open art gallery between 5 PM and midnight for seven hours: shops, studios, galleries, churches, courtyards, even private living rooms will open their doors. The organizers are the Town of Bad Wimpfen with local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry; the sponsor is the KulturStiftung der Kreissparkasse Heilbronn.
The program is spread throughout the entire old town:
At 6 PM, the central vernissage will take place, officially opening the art night. The motto for 2026: 'Germany's Most Beautiful Old Town' — a confident, tongue-in-cheek claim that Bad Wimpfen can indeed defend well. The vernissage brings together the artists whose works are exhibited during the night, as well as local politicians and the cultural scene.
Bad Wimpfen's landmark is the Blue Tower — the only surviving tower of the medieval Imperial Palace of Wimpfen, which in the 12th century was one of the largest imperial palaces of the Holy Roman Empire. During the art night, the Blue Tower is freely accessible — you can climb to its platform and see the old town illuminated from above at night. One of Southern Germany's most impressive city views.
A Wimpfen specialty: Residents place chairs in front of their doors and invite visitors to linger. This small, almost intimate gesture makes the Lange KunstNacht more than just a cultural event — it becomes a neighborhood gathering where the boundaries between resident, artist, and visitor become permeable for one night.
Bad Wimpfen is located in the district of Heilbronn on the Neckar River, just under 15 km north of Heilbronn. With just under 7,000 inhabitants, it is a small town — but one with historical substance: the old town with half-timbered houses from the 14th to 18th centuries, the Blue Tower, the Red Tower, the Hohenstaufen reliefs, the narrow medieval town layout, plus the neighboring Wimpfen im Tal monastery — Bad Wimpfen was an imperial city in the Middle Ages, and it still looks almost unchanged today.
The 2026 edition runs on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 5 PM to midnight throughout the entire old town of Bad Wimpfen. The festival is not centrally staged but spread across the whole town — shops, studios, galleries, courtyards, apartments, churches, and squares become a stage for visual and performing arts for one night.
Central program points: the vernissage at 6 PM under the motto 'Germany's most beautiful old town', the evening light installations on the half-timbered facades, and the fire-dance show late in the evening as the highlight. Residents place chairs in front of their doors — a Wimpfen tradition that makes the atmosphere personal.
Program flyer with map available at the entrance to the old town (PDF download at badwimpfen.de).
Completely free admission. The Blue Tower — usually ticketed — is also freely accessible during the art night. Food and drinks at stands and in open restaurants at usual prices.
By train: S-Bahn S41 from Heilbronn directly to Bad Wimpfen (approx. 25 min). By car via the A6 (exit Bad Rappenau), then B27, short drive to Bad Wimpfen. Parking is available on the outskirts of town; the old town itself is car-free during the art night.
Free admission to all program points and exhibitions. The Blue Tower is also freely accessible during the art night.
May 2, 2026, 5:00 PM to midnight. Vernissage at 6 PM. Fire-dance show usually around 10:30 PM/11 PM in the main area (exact time on the program flyer).
Pick up the program flyer with a map at the entrance to the old town — the program is spread throughout the old town, and you'll miss highlights without a map. The light installations on the half-timbered facades are most impressive from 9 PM onwards — so arrive as dusk falls. The fire-dance show at 10:30 PM/11 PM is the highlight.
