36th Edition — Six Days of Contemporary European Theatre and Dance
When Matthias Renner founded the euro-scene festival in Leipzig in 1991, Germany had just been reunified, Europe was being reordered, and Leipzig was seeking ways to position itself internationally as a city of culture. From this constellation, a festival emerged that aimed to be a bridge between Western and Eastern Europe from the outset — and it has remained so for over three decades. Today, Christian Watty leads euro-scene as artistic director and managing director.
The festival clearly positions itself: current theatre and innovative dance that challenges. Bold, socially relevant pieces from all over Europe and its global connections, combined with world premieres, co-productions, and German premieres. You won't find mainstream entertainment here — euro-scene sees itself as a forum for stage art that poses societal questions.
Over the festival week, the 12–14 productions are spread across Leipzig's most important stages: Schauspiel Leipzig for major theatre productions, Oper Leipzig for dance productions, Theater der Jungen Welt for youth and children's performances, Schaubühne Lindenfels and LOFFT — DAS THEATER for experimental pieces, Westflügel Leipzig for intimate formats. Additionally, euro-scene utilizes urban spaces and unusual locations like museums.
The nationally acclaimed competition «Das beste deutsche Tanzsolo» (The Best German Dance Solo) takes place annually as part of euro-scene — a central platform for German dance artists. The mix of an international festival and a national competition makes euro-scene a hub for the German-speaking dance and theatre scene.
The 2026 edition continues the artistic profile under the direction of Christian Watty: own productions, co-productions, world premieres, and German premieres. Focus: «current theatre and innovative dance that challenges: bold, socially relevant pieces».
The complete 2026 programme will be published on euro-scene.de in the summer. As every year, the performances will be spread across Leipzig's main theatres and some selected special venues (museums, urban spaces).
The complete programme will be published on euro-scene.de — typically in August/September before the festival.
Leipzig is accessible by ICE and Regio trains from all over Germany. The venues are located in the city centre or easily reachable by tram.
Tickets per performance and festival passes are available at euro-scene.de or the respective venue box office.
The City of Leipzig and the Saxon State Ministry for Science, Culture and Tourism support the festival.
