Pride in the East German Metropolis
Christopher Street Day (CSD) Leipzig has been an integral part of Leipzig's festival calendar since 1992 – and the most important LGBTQ+ event in the new federal states. What began as a small demonstration during the Wendezeit has developed into a multi-day program week with thousands of participants. The organizer is the non-profit CSD Leipzig e.V., which advocates for the rights of queer people.
Program Week and Demonstration Day
The structure is clear:
- Program Week with political lectures, readings, theatre, films, parties, and community events
- Demonstration Day as the highlight: rally on Augustusplatz, followed by a demonstration through the city centre
- Street Festival on Augustusplatz with several stages, stands from organisations, and bars
Augustusplatz: Symbolic Location
The Augustusplatz is not accidentally the venue: it was here that the people of Leipzig gathered for the Monday Demonstrations in 1989, which led to the Peaceful Revolution. Pride on Augustusplatz thus stands in a long tradition of civil society demonstrations – the Peaceful Revolution, queer emancipation, and democratic engagement share the same symbolic space.
Politics and Celebration
CSD Leipzig is explicitly political: for the full equality of queer people, against hate and discrimination. At the same time, it is a city festival – with drag shows, DJ sets, colourful floats in the demonstration, and a street festival on Augustusplatz that lasts into the evening. In the state of Saxony, where queer topics are not always discussed as a matter of course, Leipzig thus sends an important annual signal.
