Traditional Carnival Parade of the AKG 1863 through the historic Old Town
Ahrweiler is one of the northern strongholds of Rhenish Carnival. The medieval old town with its intact city walls and four gates provides an unusual backdrop for a Rosenmontagszug that has attracted thousands of Carnival enthusiasts from the Rhineland and the Eifel for decades. The organizer is the Ahrweiler Karnevalsgesellschaft 1863 e.V. (AKG), one of the oldest Carnival societies in the region.
The day begins in the late morning with street Carnival on the Marktplatz. From 11:11 AM, the alleys fill up, local establishments open their Carnival formats, and the first dance troupes present themselves. These three hours before the actual parade have become a firm pre-show and are now part of the actual festival atmosphere for many Carnival fans.
The Rosenmontagszug assembles at 1:11 PM in Walporzheimer Straße. The parade then sets off and follows this route: Walporzheimer Straße – Oberhutstraße – Johannes-Müller-Straße – Marktplatz – Ahrhutstraße – Friedrichstraße – Niederhutstraße – Marktplatz. The narrow path through the historic alleys creates dense scenes and close proximity between the parade and the audience.
Alongside the AKG, numerous friendly Carnival associations from the region participate in the parade. With floats, walking groups, dance troupes, and music bands, a dense procession is formed, combining traditional Carnival formats with current political and social themes. The 'Wurfbeute' – sweets, plush toys, flowers – are generously thrown into the audience, as is customary in the Rhenish Carnival tradition.
The program is organized by the Ahrweiler Karnevalsgesellschaft 1863 e.V. Current information on the order of floats and participating associations will be published on the society's website.
The exact times and the order of floats will be communicated by the AKG in advance.
