41 days of festive stalls and glittering lights on Kennedyplatz — "Best Sustainable Christmas Market in Europe"
The International Christmas Market Essen is one of the largest and oldest Christmas markets in the Ruhr area. With a 41-day run (November 13 to December 23), it is also one of the longest-running Advent markets in Germany. The organizer is EMG – Essen Marketing GmbH, which positions the event as a key tourist attraction for the city.
The venue is Kennedyplatz in the heart of Essen's city center — one of the largest public squares in the region. The landmark is the Lichtkrone (Light Crown), a striking light installation spanning the square, which becomes a postcard-perfect backdrop, especially at night. Adding to the charm is a baroque carousel, featuring mirrors, carved horses, and light details, serving as a photo highlight for families.
A special feature is the separate medieval market "Flachsmarkt" — an area within the Christmas market with a historical theme: blacksmiths in leather armor, lathes, archery, storytellers, and medieval music. This section expands the classic Christmas market concept and appeals to a different audience than the traditional stalls on Kennedyplatz.
In 2023, European Best Destinations recognized the Essen Christmas Market as the best sustainable Christmas market in Europe. The city consistently adheres to sustainability criteria:
The market offers the full spectrum of classic German Christmas markets – mulled wine, candied almonds, potato pancakes, bratwurst, nativity figures, candles, wood carvings – combined with international stalls (e.g., French specialties, Dutch stroopwafels, Czech trdelnik). Hence the name "International Christmas Market.".
With approximately 583,000 inhabitants, Essen is the largest city in the Ruhr area and was the European Capital of Culture in 2010. The city center is pedestrian-only (Limbecker Platz, Kettwiger Straße) and well-connected via the main train station. The Christmas market can be ideally combined with a visit to the Zeche Zollverein (UNESCO World Heritage site, with its own winter market) — one of Europe's most extraordinary industrial heritage sites.
The 2026 edition is consistently sustainable: green electricity, reusable tableware, no single-use plastic, focus on regional organic and fair-trade products. The Light Crown will once again be the square's landmark, the baroque carousel attracts families, and the Flachsmarkt adds its own accent with medieval acts.
