Traditional festival commemorating the mining history of the South Harz region
Bleicherode is located in the district of Nordhausen, on the southern edge of the Harz mountains in Thuringia. The town has a long mining history: potash salts were mined here from the late 19th century onwards. The Bleicherode salt mine was once part of the most important potash mining districts in Central Germany. Mining continues to shape the town's identity today, even though extraction has ended — the Bergmannsfest is the annual commemoration of this history.
The Bergmannsfest follows an established format: Friday opening with music for a younger audience, Saturday the 'Miner's Day' with mining festivities, miners' parade, and a classic festival program, Sunday Family Day with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch, and a relaxed conclusion. The venue is the festival grounds on Bahnhofstraße — the traditional Bleicherode festival site with a festival tent, stage, and carousels.
Saturday — 'Miner's Day' — is the ceremonial highlight. The Bleicherode Miners' Association in its historical uniforms, a miners' parade through the town, a mining ceremony on the festival grounds, and speeches about the history of the mining district are part of the program. This is followed by a ceremony in the tent, the Miner's Order of Merit for distinguished individuals, music, and dancing late into the night.
Traditionally, the Bergmannsfest supplements its program with mine tours — provided that shaft facilities or mining monuments in the region are accessible. Mining workshops and the mining association also present their heritage.
Those who wish to extend their festival visit will find worthwhile excursion destinations in the South Harz: the city of Nordhausen with its tradition of schnapps production (Echter Nordhäuser), the Heinrichshöhle cave and the Karst hiking trails, the Kyffhäuser monument with the Barbarossa statue, and the Mittelbau-Dora memorial site.
The 2026 Bergmannsfest follows the traditional three-day format. Friday, July 3: Opening of the festival grounds, music for a younger audience in the evening, opening of the festival tent. Saturday, July 4 — 'Miner's Day' — forms the ceremonial highlight with a miners' parade in historical uniforms, a mining ceremony on the festival grounds, speeches on the history of the mining district, and a ceremony in the festival tent. Sunday, July 5: Family Day with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch, carousels, and a relaxed conclusion.
