Late summer funfair of the Rolandstadt by the Harz mountains with rides and stalls
The Herbstjahrmarkt, alongside the spring funfair and the Rolandsfest, is one of the three major Volksfest (public festival) dates in the annual calendar of the city of Nordhausen. The Rolandstadt on the southern edge of the Harz mountains has celebrated its funfair tradition for decades, and with its Herbstjahrmarkt, it is one of the most important meeting points for showmen and families from the Nordhausen district, the Eichsfeld, and northern Thuringia.
The venue is August-Bebel-Platz in the center of Nordhausen, easily accessible on foot from the train station and via the main traffic routes. For several days, a funfair with rides of all sizes – from children's rides to larger spinning rides – lines up next to stalls, shooting galleries, sweet stalls, and market booths. The program changes daily and also includes special evening events, fireworks, or family discount days depending on the weekday.
While the city of Nordhausen maintains the Rolandsfest as a major city festival and counterpart to Bremen's Rolandfest, the spring and autumn funfairs are classic showman events – with free admission to the grounds, and separate charges for individual rides. The late summer edition is traditionally considered the larger of the two annual fairs.
As in previous years, the Herbstjahrmarkt will take place in late summer 2026 on August-Bebel-Platz in Nordhausen. Showmen from all over Thuringia and the surrounding federal states will set up their businesses for several days.
The exact date for 2026 is usually published in the summer on nordhausen.de and on the city's Facebook page. Experience shows that the funfair typically starts on the first Saturday or Sunday in September and runs for about nine days.
Specific opening hours for 2026 will be communicated by the organizer in due time.
