Summer Classics Open Air at Doberan Minster

Concept

The Summer Classics Open Air is one of the highlights of the Bad Doberan-Heiligendamm Music Summer. Each year, one of the great operas in music history is staged as an open-air production in front of the Doberan Minster – with a large choir, orchestra, and soloists in the leading roles.

Venue

Doberan Minster, the former monastery church of a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century, is considered one of the most significant Brick Gothic structures in Northern Germany. The High Gothic facade becomes part of the stage architecture in the open-air performance – a backdrop that few other classical productions in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can offer.

Local Context

Bad Doberan, in the Rostock district, was the cradle of spa culture on the Baltic coast from 1793 onwards as the 'first German seaside resort'. The Summer Classics Open Air picks up on this tradition, combining spa town culture with grand opera. The entire Bad Doberan-Heiligendamm Music Summer complements the open-air event with concerts in churches and in the salon of the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm.
