Annual Schützenfest of the St. Sebastian Schützenbruderschaft 1840 in the Schützenhalle
If you drive south of Paderborn into the East Westphalian hill country, you will reach Borchen, a municipality with around 13,000 inhabitants in the southern Paderborn district. Borchen consists of several districts — Nordborchen, with around 3,000 inhabitants, is one of the larger ones. Like many East Westphalian villages, Nordborchen has its own lively club life, with shooting traditions at its core. The St. Sebastian Schützenbruderschaft Nordborchen 1840 e.V. is more than just a club — it is a central element of identity for the village community.
The fraternity was founded in 1840 — making it one of the oldest generations of East Westphalian shooting clubs, which emerged in the early 19th century as part of the bourgeois club movement. Over 180 years of club history mean: numerous generations of Nordborchen men (and for several decades, women too) have passed through the fraternity. King couples, board members, float builders — the Schützenfest is the fruit of annual collective effort.
The venue is the Schützenhalle Nordborchen at Wegelange 13 — the club's own event hall with an adjoining outdoor area. The Schützenhalle serves as a multi-purpose hall throughout the year: club evenings, meetings, private celebrations. During the Schützenfest, it transforms into a festival hall with a stage, dance floor, and bar, while the outdoor area hosts the bird shooting stand, beer stands, and festival activities. The club's own character ensures a family atmosphere — unlike city festivals, here you know most of the guests personally.
The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Friday, September 4th to Sunday, September 6th. On Friday evening, the Schützenhalle opens with the festival opening — free admission, making the start an open event for everyone in Nordborchen. Saturday is bird shooting day: in the morning, fraternity members shoot at the wooden bird; whoever knocks down the last piece becomes the new king. In the evening, the crowning ceremony and festival ball take place. Sunday concludes with a parade through Nordborchen, a royal parade, and the closing festivities.
The bird shooting on Saturday is the mythological heart of every Schützenfest. A wooden bird is placed on a high pole in the outdoor area of the Schützenhalle. Fraternity members take turns shooting at the detachable parts of the bird with special rifles — wings, crown, tail. Whoever knocks down the final piece, the torso, from the pole becomes the new Schützenkönig (shooting king) of the fraternity for the upcoming term (usually one year).
Like many Rhenish-Westphalian shooting fraternities, the Nordborchen fraternity is also under the patronage of Saint Sebastian. The Roman soldier and martyr has been the patron saint of marksmen and soldiers since the Middle Ages — this connection historically links the shooting tradition to medieval city defense, from which the oldest fraternities emerged. In Nordborchen, the patronage also establishes the festival's connection to the church — the festival mass is part of the traditional festival structure.
The Paderborn district is one of the strongest regions for shooting traditions in Germany. The Bürgerschützenverein Paderborn (Liboriusfest) alone is one of Westphalia's major folk festivals, and the district fraternity association (Bezirksbruderschaft Paderborn) comprises dozens of individual fraternities. Nordborchen is part of this dense regional shooting landscape — king couples visit neighboring clubs, and district meetings and fraternity masses are regularly on the calendar.
The 2026 edition celebrates the Nordborchen Schützenfest in its established three-day format. With the festival opening on Friday (free admission), bird shooting and crowning on Saturday, and a grand parade on Sunday, the festival remains true to the classic pattern of Westphalian Schützenfeste. The St. Sebastian Schützenbruderschaft 1840, as the organizing fraternity, ensures a smooth execution with over 180 years of experience.
