About Johannifeuer Sinzing

In Sinzing on the Danube, a village of 6,000 inhabitants a few kilometers west of Regensburg, the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Sinzing e.V. (Volunteer Fire Brigade) organizes its Johannifeuer (St. John's Eve bonfire) every year at the end of June. The Sonnwendfeuer (Midsummer bonfire) traditionally ignites only at nightfall; beforehand, people can gather in a relaxed atmosphere with food and drinks. A typical Bavarian traditional festival that brings the village community together every year in a convivial atmosphere.

Getting There

By train to Sinzing (Regensburg-Ingolstadt line), then a short walk to the fire station. By car via the B16 or A93 exit Sinzing.

Admission

Free admission. Food and drinks are available on-site, provided by the FFW Sinzing.

Weather

Outdoor event, sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing recommended. In case of persistent rain, the bonfire may be postponed — information will be provided in good time on the association's social media channels.

One of Bavaria's Oldest Traditional Festivals

The Johannifeuer — also known as Sonnwendfeuer — has its roots in pre-Christian times, was integrated into the Christian calendar in the Middle Ages (St. John's Day, June 24th), and remains a living tradition in many Bavarian villages to this day. In Sinzing, the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Sinzing e.V. takes charge of the organization, from procuring the wood and building the pyre to catering.

Sinzing — The Western Gateway to Regensburg

Sinzing is located directly on the Danube, on the western edge of the Regensburg district (Bavaria state). The municipality is known beyond its borders for Eichhofen Castle, Sinzing Castle, and its location in the Danube Valley nature reserve. Sinzing is easily accessible by train via the Regensburg-Ingolstadt line in just a few minutes.
