City marathon through the UNESCO World Heritage city on the Danube
The Regensburg Marathon is one of the most beautiful city marathons in Southern Germany. Since 1993, the race has transformed the cathedral city at the confluence of the Danube, Naab, and Regen rivers into an open sports stage on a May weekend. The course leads through the medieval Old Town of Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site – past the Gothic East Gate, across the Stone Bridge (built 1135–1146, one of Germany's oldest preserved bridges), along the Walhalla axis, and into the finish on the test track of Schaeffler Technologies.
The event concept is spread over two days: On Saturday, the DEZ mini-marathon for families and children takes place, and on Sunday, the main distances. The Marathon (42.195 km), Three-Quarter Marathon (31.6 km), and Half Marathon (21.1 km) start together at 8:30 AM, followed by the Quarter Marathon (10.5 km) at 11:30 AM. Additionally, there is a 4.8 km Nordic walking course. The elevation profile is almost flat – a classic city course with potential for personal bests.
As always, the start and finish are located at the Infineon parking lot at Westbad, Wernerwerkstraße 2. This is also where the event grounds, the Marathon Expo (Sat & Sun), the award ceremonies, the massage zones, and the large catering tent are situated. The organizer, LLC Marathon Regensburg e.V., a non-profit association, organizes the event with over 1,000 volunteers.
The Regensburg Marathon is also a sports festival: a sports expo with over 50 exhibitors, a pasta party on Saturday evening, a children's sports program at DEZ, live music along the course, and catering at the finish line. The city itself participates – residents watch from their windows along the route, cafés and shops offer special promotions, and numerous bands along the course create a kilometers-long atmosphere.
Regensburg, located in the Upper Palatinate, is considered one of Germany's most beautiful cities with its completely preserved medieval old town. Since 2006, the old town with its district of Stadtamhof has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Those who run the marathon run through over 2,000 years of history – from the Roman-founded Castra Regina, to an early medieval bishopric, and a flourishing imperial city.
The running weekend begins on Saturday, May 16, 2026, with the DEZ mini-marathon and the Marathon Expo at Westbad (9:30 AM–6:30 PM). Sunday, May 17, 2026, is the main race day. Approximately 4,000 participants are expected. Mid-May weather statistics: typically 15–20 °C, ideal running conditions.
