Upper Franconian Wiesenfest on the Goldberg – Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bavaria
The Selber Heimat- und Wiesenfest is one of the classic Upper Franconian Wiesenfeste – a regionally typical form of Volksfest where schools take center stage. Unlike the Munich Oktoberfest or comparable large Bavarian events, the Upper Franconian Wiesenfest is strongly anchored in the local school system: The students march together in festive parades to the festival grounds, each school with its own traditional costume, flags, and songs. The Free State of Bavaria has added this custom to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The festival takes place on the Goldberg festival grounds (Papiermühlweg 25), an established venue on the edge of the town center. Here you'll find the large festival tent, several amusement rides, and food stalls – the classic Volksfest layout. Live bands, Upper Franconian and national acts, perform in the festival tent, accompanied by the serving of Upper Franconian beer and traditional pub cuisine.
The highlights are the two school parades: On Sunday, July 12, at 12:45 PM, and on Monday, July 13, also at 12:45 PM, the town's schools – primary schools, middle schools, Realschule, and Gymnasium – march together through the town center to the festival grounds. Each school with its own traditional costume and songs. Parents, grandparents, and friends line the streets – for many residents of Selb, this is THE event of the year.
Selb is located in the district of Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge in Upper Franconia (Bavaria), near the Czech border. The town is known as the Porcelain Capital of Bavaria – Rosenthal, Hutschenreuther, Heinrich, Villeroy & Boch had their main factories here, and a significant part of the town's economy is still tied to the porcelain industry. The Wiesenfest is Selb's most important traditional event – an occasion where the town reaffirms its Franconian-Upper Franconian identity, while the porcelain tradition is now more visible at the Porzellanikon museum and the Rosenthal outlet area.
In 2026, the Selber Heimat- und Wiesenfest will continue its tradition, cherished over generations: four days of Volksfest at the Goldberg, with the two school parades on Sunday and Monday at its center. The organizer is the City of Selb (Department of School and Sports).
The festival tent at Goldberg offers traditional Upper Franconian pub cuisine, live music (program to be published by the city in early summer 2026), along with several amusement rides for families and young people. The school parade is THE event – each school with its own traditional costume, songs, and student marshals.
By car via the A93 (exit Selb-Süd or Selb-Nord). By train to Selb-Stadt or Selb-Plößberg, from there a short walk or bus ride to the Goldberg festival grounds. Close to the Czech border – travel from Cheb (Eger) is also possible.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Consumption in the festival tent is at Upper Franconian pub prices. Amusement rides have their own prices. The school parade can be viewed for free from the town center.
Friday evening, 6 PM, for the opening. Sunday and Monday from 11 AM onwards for the school parades at 12:45 PM. Secure the best spots along the main street of the town center in advance. Festival tent highlights on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
