Selb – the City of White Gold

No other city in Germany is as closely associated with porcelain production as Selb in the Upper Franconian district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge (Bavaria). World-renowned manufacturers such as Rosenthal and Hutschenreuther have their roots here, and the citizens of Selb have been known for generations as "Porzelliner" – people whose lives and work were shaped by "white gold." The Festival of the Porcelain Makers is the annual tribute to this identity.

Europe's Largest Porcelain Flea Market

The heart of the festival is Europe's largest porcelain flea market. At the sales stands, which stretch for about three kilometers through the city center, a strict "purity law" applies: only used or antique porcelain and ceramics may be sold – no new goods. For collectors, this is the ideal opportunity to complete a service set or find rare treasures. On Saturday, around 350 to 400 stalls are available, and on Sunday, about 100. Stall spaces are allocated in May through a public lottery.

Program and Hands-on Activities

Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., a diverse supporting program accompanies the market activities:

  • Opening by the Mayor
  • Live music in the city center
  • Porcelain identification by the team from the Porzellanikon (German Porcelain Museum)
  • Porcelain painting to try yourself
  • Food and drink stands
  • Festival church service on Sunday

Atmosphere

Anyone visiting the Festival of the Porcelain Makers immerses themselves in the history of an entire region. Serious collectors, curious families, and lovers of beautiful things mingle among the stalls. The Porzellanikon, with its special opening hours, combines the market with expert depth – here you can not only buy but also learn. Selb presents itself this weekend as what it is: the undisputed capital of German porcelain.
