The Pankow Anger — Heart of an Old Village
Pankow is now a populous district of Berlin, but its core has village roots. The Anger along Ossietzkystraße and Breite Straße in the Pankow locality shows this character to this day: low houses, cafés, small shops, the old village church, and in between, the Panke river that gives it its name, winding through the neighbourhood. It is precisely here that the showman and event company Jüttner Entertainment organises the Fest an der Panke every September — one of the most important neighbourhood festivals in the north of Berlin.
Three Zones, One Festival
The festival is spatially divided into three zones, each with its own focus:
- Ossietzkystraße — Culture Mile: this is where the larger of the two stages with the main programme is located. Live bands from the district and national acts, cover bands, Schlager music in the evening
- Breite Straße — Food & Market: this street features food trucks, street food stalls, beer stands, and sales stalls with arts and crafts
- Anger Market — Family Zone: carousels, bouncy castle, bungee trampoline, giant slide, classic Volksfest games for children
Association and Community Mile
An important component of the festival are the association stalls: Pankow associations, social initiatives, sports clubs, political parties, and district institutions present their work, collect signatures, and gain new members. This makes the Fest an der Panke a true community festival with a political-social dimension — and distinguishes it from purely commercial neighbourhood festivals.
Pankow as a District
With over 400,000 inhabitants, Pankow is one of Berlin's most populous districts. In addition to the locality of the same name, it also includes Prenzlauer Berg, Weißensee, Niederschönhausen, and several smaller localities. The core of Pankow differs significantly from the hip Prenzlauer Berg atmosphere — it is quieter, more bourgeois, more family-oriented. The Fest an der Panke caters precisely to this profile: not a major event, but a local weekend where residents and their friends come together.
