Frankfurt's Europe Day on the Römerberg – with EU institutions, EUNIC cultural institutes, and music from all over Europe
The Europa-Fest Frankfurt is the central city event for May 9th – Europe Day, celebrating the Schuman Declaration of 1950. Frankfurt takes this tradition particularly seriously: as the seat of the European Central Bank and the location of the Paulskirche (cradle of German democracy in 1848), the city has a dual European identity. The festival on the Römerberg makes this connection visible and tangible.
The motto for the 2026 edition stands for the message that European identity is lived in the cities. The Römerberg and the nearby Paulskirche will be illuminated in EU blue in the evening – a sign visible from the Main bridge to the banking district.
The European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) network is present as a collective. With their own information booths, represented are the Instituto Cervantes Frankfurt (Spain), the French Institute, the Italian Institute, as well as German cultural partners. Together, they strengthen European identity in the Main metropolis and present educational, cultural, and language offerings.
The stage program is explicitly European: singer-songwriter TIGISTI X Gregor, the choir of the European Central Bank with the program "Celebrating Europe," the Flamenco-Pop band König-Kings (Reyes-Family), the Bulgarian dance group Impuls, the Funk/Disco-Pop formation DiScoville, and headliner Shantel LIVE with global beats and Balkan sound. Additionally, there will be discussion pavilions on European topics.
Culinary-wise, the festival covers all of Europe – from French patisserie and Italian pasta stands to Greek street food, Polish pierogi, Spanish tapas, and Berliner doughnuts from Germany. For children, there are creative and playful hands-on activities at various stations around the Römer.
The Europa-Fest has always been free of charge. This consciously positions it as a community festival, not an institutional self-representation of the EU – the encounter between Frankfurt's citizens and European institutions is the focus.
Ten hours of European community festival in Frankfurt's Old Town: stage program from late morning until 9 PM, EU market with information booths from cultural institutes, discussion pavilions, culinary stands from all over Europe, and children's activity stations. The evening highlight is the illumination of the Römer and Paulskirche in EU blue.
