One of Frankfurt's oldest folk festivals with jousting and fireworks
The Frankfurt Mainfest is one of the oldest and most venerable folk festivals in the metropolis on the Main. Its roots date back to 1340, when the consecration of the Dreikönigskirche in Sachsenhausen prompted the Frankfurt Fishermen's Guild to establish its own festival. After World War II, the festival was revived in 1973 and has since been an integral part of Frankfurt's summer calendar. In 2026, the Mainfest will run from July 31 to August 3.
The venue is the Main riverbank in the old town: Mainkai, Fahrtor, and Römerberg form the festival area. Rides, a Ferris wheel, food stalls, apple wine stands, and stages are lined up directly along the river. The backdrop of the old town, the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge), and the Main panorama is one of Frankfurt's most impressive cityscapes.
The highlight of the festival is the traditional jousting on the Main – Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 12 p.m. Participants in colorful historical costumes compete against each other in boats, trying to push each other into the water with padded lances. A medieval tradition that is maintained in many cities along the Rhine and Main – in Frankfurt, it is linked to the city's old fishing guild.
The grand finale is the large fireworks display on Monday evening – traditionally one of the biggest fireworks of the year in Frankfurt. Thousands of spectators line the Main riverbank, the bridges (especially the Eiserner Steg), and the Sachsenhausen side of the Main. The reflection on the water, the skyline backdrop, and the concluding spectacle after the folk festival make the fireworks a visual highlight.
The gastronomic offerings are classically Hessian: apple wine from Sachsenhausen (Frankfurt's traditional district for apple wine culture), Frankfurt sausages, Handkäs mit Musik (marinated cheese with onions), Bethmännchen (marzipan cookies), and dishes from the entire region. In addition, there are carousels, a Ferris wheel, and classic folk festival attractions.
Frankfurt am Main, with around 760,000 inhabitants, is Hesse's largest city and the only German major city with a skyline. The European Central Bank, the German Stock Exchange, and over 270 banks are headquartered here. At the same time, the city cherishes its traditions: the old town, Römerberg, the Cathedral, and Sachsenhausen with its apple wine taverns are the historical counterpart to the banking high-rise district. The Mainfest bridges both worlds – a folk festival in the canyons between glass facades.
