Whitsun Festival of the St. Rochus Brotherhood
The Prunk- und Heimatfest Broich-Peel is the annual Whitsun festival of the St. Rochus Schützenbruderschaft Broich-Peel e.V., founded in 1920. From Saturday, May 30 to Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the festival tent and fairground in the Broich-Peel district of Mönchengladbach will become the scene of a classic Lower Rhine Schützenfest — march music, parades, festival ceremony, ball, and royal proclamation.
Own Royal Couple for the First Time
The 2026 edition is historic: For the first time in its club history, Broich-Peel will have its own royal couple. The 2026 majesties have already been solemnly proclaimed and will wear the insignia — royal medal, royal eagle, and royal silver — during the four festival days. The royal couple will lead the parades, be honored at the high mass, and celebrated at the royal ball.
Program for the Four Days
On Saturday, May 30, the festival begins at 1:30 PM at the festival tent with the assembly of the brotherhood members, the muster of the companies, and the festival ceremony. On Whit Sunday and Monday, grand parades through Broich-Peel, morning pint, high mass, and the traditional royal ball are on the program. On Tuesday, June 2, the festival concludes with the coronation breakfast and a festive farewell.
Corpus Christi Procession on June 4
Just two days after the festival, on Thursday, June 4, 2026, the Corpus Christi procession will take place: 7:00 AM at the Rochusstraße wayside shrine, 9:00 AM festival high mass, musical conclusion at the parish hall. The Schützenbruderschaft will accompany the procession in uniform — this connects the festival and religious tradition into a cohesive Whitsun week.
Broich-Peel — District of Mönchengladbach
Despite misleading geography, Broich-Peel is not located in Mülheim an der Ruhr, but is a district of Mönchengladbach-Wickrath on the southwestern outskirts. The parish of St. Rochus belongs to the large parish of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt Rheydt. Schützenfests, Whitsun Kirmes, and close ties to neighboring clubs (Beeck, Günhoven, Rheindahlen, Mönchengladbach) shape the rural club life in the lower Lower Rhine region. Administratively, however, Broich-Peel is located in the Mettmann district (district 05117) in the context of the Mülheim an der Ruhr festival dataset — the St. Rochus Brotherhood is historically based there.
Schützen Tradition on the Lower Rhine
The St. Rochus Schützenbruderschaft is a member of the Federation of Historical German Schützen Brotherhoods and has been preserving Catholic-civic Schützen tradition for over 100 years. The patron saint is St. Roch, patron against plague and epidemics. In addition to the Whitsun festival, the Brotherhood organizes Oktoberfest (October 17) and Remembrance Day, as well as social events throughout the year.
