About Schwibbogenfest Wolkenstein

On the first Advent weekend (November 27 and 28, 2026), Wolkenstein's market square transforms into a festive Advent stage. The Schwibbogenfest begins on Friday evening with the ceremonial ringing in of the Christmas season by the bells of St. Bartholomew's Church, the joint erection of the town pyramid, brass band music, and songs. On Saturday, the small Christmas market opens with regional delicacies from local clubs, mulled wine, bratwurst, and Erzgebirge handicrafts. Atmospheric, small, and familial. Free admission.

Advent Atmosphere with Bell Chimes and Pyramid

The Schwibbogenfest in Wolkenstein is one of the classic Erzgebirge Advent festivals — not a large market, but a lovingly staged festival of lights in the historic old town on the first Advent weekend. The opening on Friday evening is the emotional highlight: at 6:00 PM, the bells of St. Bartholomew's Church ring in the Advent season. Citizens, families, and guests gather on the market square to jointly erect the town pyramid — a beautiful Erzgebirge tradition where the typical pyramid figures are put in place accompanied by brass band music and communal singing.

Light Creations of the Region — Schwibbögen, Pyramids, Nutcrackers

The Schwibbogen — the characteristic arched light arch with carved figures from the Erzgebirge — gives the festival its name. Wolkenstein, with around 3,800 inhabitants in the Erzgebirgskreis district, is integrated into the Erzgebirge Folk Art tradition, which has produced pyramids, nutcrackers, angels, miner figures, and Schwibbögen for centuries. During the Schwibbogenfest, local wood carvers will be present with stalls, showcasing their craft.

Wolkenstein Clubs and Regional Delicacies

The Wolkenstein clubs — fire department, sports, carnival, local heritage society — serve food and drinks at stalls around the market square: mulled wine and children's punch, Erzgebirge bratwurst, Pulsnitz gingerbread, stollen, along with Wolkenstein beer and wine from nearby Saxony-Anhalt. It's not about mass tourism — the stalls are run by volunteers, and the proceeds go back into the club funds.

Brass Band and Communal Singing

The festival is primarily shaped musically by the local brass band — Advent chorales, traditional Erzgebirge songs, and some more modern pieces. On Friday evening, during the erection of the pyramid, there will be communal singing — mostly classic Advent songs from the Erzgebirge, whose lyrics recall the lighting of candles and the shared waiting for Christmas. The atmosphere is solemn, but not stiff: a town celebrating itself during the most beautiful time of the year.

Wolkenstein and the Castle

A special feature of Wolkenstein is the Burg Wolkenstein — an impressive cliff-top castle above the town, now operated as a museum. Visitors to the Schwibbogenfest can combine it with a climb to the castle — the view from above over the festively illuminated old town is one of the most beautiful experiences of an Erzgebirge Advent.
