Four days of medieval times on Ascension Day — 33rd Wolkenstein Castle Festival from May 14th to 17th, 2026
Wolkenstein is a small mountain town in the Erzgebirgskreis district (state of Saxony), known for its 16th-century Renaissance castle, which towers on a rocky outcrop high above the Zschopau valley. The medieval town was founded in the 13th century as a mining town — silver and tin ores were the source of its wealth. Today, Wolkenstein thrives on tourism and Erzgebirge folk art crafts. From May 14th to 17th, 2026 — on Ascension Day and the following weekend — the castle and old town will transform into a medieval marketplace with merchants, craft demonstrations, and knight spectacles. It is the 33rd edition of the Wolkenstein Castle Festival.
Over the four days, around 40 merchants in medieval attire gather in the alleys and on the castle square. They offer jewelry (bronze, silver, copper), medieval clothing (linen shirts, wool cloaks, laced bodices), leather goods, wooden toys, ceramics, mead (honey wine), and herbal products. Craftsmen demonstrate their skills to the public: felt makers create warm hats and scarves from loose wool, blacksmiths forge horseshoe nails and knives over open fires, chain makers produce chainmail from thousands of small iron rings, and candle dippers repeatedly dip wicks into hot beeswax.
Several show fights per day transport the audience into medieval battles: knights in full armor (helmet, breastplate, greaves) compete against each other, fighting with swords and battle axes, falling choreographically and getting back up. A lance-throwing demonstration on foot shows the fighters' accuracy on moving targets. In the evening, the fire magicians take over: jugglers hurl flaming torches, fire eaters spit fire, and sword swallowers perform their acts, not for the faint of heart. Acrobatics — somersaults, stilt walkers, jugglers — are also part of the program.
The castle festival is very family-friendly: children can dip their own candles (with guidance), sift small semi-precious stones from sand at a gem-panning station, get their faces painted, practice sawing wood, and try archery under instruction. A historic chain carousel — made entirely of wood and powered by horses — spins with children in medieval costumes. Jesters tell fairy tales by the campfire, and a puppet show features Robin Hood scenes.
Medieval cuisine dominates: mead (honey wine) is drunk from wooden cups, 'Kräuterflader' (large flatbreads with cheese, ham, and fresh herbs) are baked on hot stones, suckling pigs turn over open fires, cabbage rolls and millet porridge offer hearty alternatives, and crêpes and sweet pastries round off the offerings. Medieval beer is served in clay jugs, dark and unfiltered. Admission to the festival costs €8–10 (for adults; children under 12 often free or reduced), depending on the category. The historic atmosphere and the backdrop of Wolkenstein Castle make the festival one of the most atmospheric medieval events in the Erzgebirge.
From May 14th to 17th, 2026, the 33rd Wolkenstein Castle Festival opens its gates — four days of medieval times on Ascension Day and the following weekend. The castle and old town become the stage for around 40 merchants in medieval attire, show fights, craft demonstrations, and fire magic in the evening.
The medieval atmosphere is authentic: mead from wooden cups, 'Kräuterflader' from hot stones, suckling pig over open fires, accompanied by hurdy-gurdy music and bagpipe sounds. Families will find a comprehensive children's program with candle dipping, gem panning, and archery under instruction.
