About Martensmarkt

The Schweriner Martensmarkt celebrates a tradition over 700 years old between Schwerin and Lübeck: A three-day medieval spectacle commemorates the arrival of the Lübeck "Martensmann", who symbolically presents a barrel of wine to the Duke of Mecklenburg. The custom dates back to the Middle Ages, was interrupted in 1817, and revived in 1991 after reunification. The program includes a lantern procession, the ritual dialogue between the Martensmann and the city president, and a medieval market with crafts, street music, and performances. Admission is free.

A Tradition for Over 700 Years

The Martensmarkt commemorates a medieval custom between the Dukes of Schwerin and the free imperial and Hanseatic city of Lübeck. It has been over 700 years since the Lübeck "Martensmann" first embarked on the arduous journey to the Duke of Mecklenburg in Schwerin to symbolically present him with a barrel of wine. This gesture secured friendly trade relations between the two Hanseatic cities.

Interruption and Revival

The tradition was interrupted in 1817 and lay dormant for over a century and a half. It was only revived in 1991 – after German reunification – to celebrate the regained connection between Mecklenburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Since then, the Martensmarkt has been an integral part of Schwerin's event calendar.

The Program

For three days in November, the old town of the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern transforms into a medieval setting:

  • Lantern Procession through the historic old town
  • Ritual Dialogue between the Martensmann and the City President
  • Medieval Market with craftsmen, traders, and historical stalls
  • Street Music, Jugglers, and Performances in the alleys

Living History in Schwerin

The Martensmarkt combines historical remembrance with a folk festival atmosphere. The ritual discussion between the Martensmann and the City President is the dramatic core of the festival – a humorously staged dialogue that keeps the centuries-old custom alive. For visitors from Schwerin and the region, the festival is an atmospheric start to the pre-Christmas season. Admission is free.
