Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Grand Summer Festival

The Schwerin Castle Festival is one of Northern Germany's most significant theatre and music festivals. Since 1993, the Mecklenburg State Theatre has transformed the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern into a large open-air stage for several weeks every summer. The programme, spanning opera, ballet, drama, musical, and concerts, extends over six weeks.

Venues

Several locations around Schwerin Castle are used: the theatre tent in the Küchengarten, the open-air stage in the Castle Gardens, the Castle Courtyard, and – for a Low German production – the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum. The backdrop for the festival is the Schwerin Residence Ensemble, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2024.

2026 Programme

The 2026 season runs from May 28 to July 19 and includes:

  • Ballet Gala »Connexion #5« – international dance gala to open the festival in the theatre tent (from May 28)
  • »The Threepenny Opera« by Brecht and Weill – 15 performances from June 19 to July 12
  • »Krawall in'n Häuhnerstall« – Low German rock revue by the Fritz Reuter Stage at the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum (June 18 to July 19)
  • MeckProms – picnic concert by the Mecklenburg State Orchestra on the open-air stage (July 14)
  • Castle Concerts »Klingendes Welterbe« and Family Concert in the Castle Courtyard (July 18 and 19)

Tradition Since 1993

Since its inception, the Castle Festival has become a firm highlight of the cultural summer in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the state capital each year and is a major tourist attraction for the entire region. Tickets start from €16.80.
