Summer festival of the Mecklenburg State Theatre at a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Schwerin Castle Festival is one of Northern Germany's most significant theatre and music festivals. Since 1993, the Mecklenburg State Theatre has transformed the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern into a large open-air stage for several weeks every summer. The programme, spanning opera, ballet, drama, musical, and concerts, extends over six weeks.
Several locations around Schwerin Castle are used: the theatre tent in the Küchengarten, the open-air stage in the Castle Gardens, the Castle Courtyard, and – for a Low German production – the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum. The backdrop for the festival is the Schwerin Residence Ensemble, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2024.

Since its inception, the Castle Festival has become a firm highlight of the cultural summer in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the state capital each year and is a major tourist attraction for the entire region. Tickets start from €16.80.
For six weeks, the 2026 Schwerin Castle Festival transforms Schwerin into a grand open-air stage. The international ballet gala »Connexion #5« in the theatre tent at Küchengarten kicks off the festivities (from May 28). This is followed by »The Threepenny Opera« by Brecht and Weill with 15 performances from June 19 to July 12, and the Low German rock revue »Krawall in'n Häuhnerstall« by the Fritz Reuter Stage at the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum (June 18 to July 19).
Highlights at the end of the festival include the MeckProms picnic concert by the Mecklenburg State Orchestra on the open-air stage on July 14, and the Castle Concerts »Klingendes Welterbe« and the Family Concert in the Castle Courtyard on July 18 and 19. Tickets start from €16.80.

The venues are located in the centre of Schwerin, around the castle. It's about a 15 to 20-minute walk from the main train station. Schwerin is accessible by regional express trains from Hamburg, Rostock, Berlin, and Lübeck. Multi-storey car parks are available in the city centre.

The MeckProms picnic concert invites you to bring your own picnic. Waterproof clothing is recommended for the open-air performances.
