Profile
The Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater on the Alter Garten in Schwerin has been the most important theatre in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for over 135 years. With five artistic departments — Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle (Orchestra), Music Theatre (Opera), Ballet, Drama, and the Low German Fritz-Reuter-Bühne — it covers a broad spectrum of classical and contemporary stage art.
Venues
The Große Haus on the Alter Garten is the main stage with over 700 seats. The nearby Kammerspiele offer space for more intimate productions, and the Konzertfoyer for chamber music. In summer, the Schlossfestspiele also open open-air venues: a theatre tent in the Küchengarten, an open-air stage in the Schlossgarten, the inner courtyard of the castle, and the Mueß open-air museum.
Season 2025/2026
The season runs from September 2025 to July 2026. Highlights include operas by Verdi and Mozart, plays by classical and contemporary authors, ballet evenings by the in-house company, and Low German comedies from the Fritz-Reuter-Bühne. The season traditionally concludes with the Schlossfestspiele (May 28 to July 19, 2026) featuring open-air productions.
