Wine market at Alter Garten with the castle backdrop
The Alter Garten is arguably Schwerin's most beautiful spot: it lies between the State Theatre, the State Museum, and Schwerin Castle. Once a year, in late summer, the Winzerfest transforms this historic square into an open wine market. For five days, wine lovers gather against the backdrop of the Neo-Renaissance castle, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2024.
The wine merchants primarily come from Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany's richest wine region. They bring a wide assortment: white, rosé, and red wines, sparkling wine and Secco, liqueurs, as well as non-alcoholic grape juice. At the stalls, you can taste, chat, and discover your favourite vintage. The atmosphere is convivial and relaxed – a piece of southwestern German wine culture in the heart of northern Germany.
Live music accompanies the events at Alter Garten throughout the entire festival week. The Schweriner Winzerfest is therefore less a loud Volksfest (people's festival) and more a place of enjoyment that invites you to linger on a mild late summer evening.
With its 34th edition in 2026, the Schweriner Winzerfest looks back on a long history. It is firmly anchored in the event calendar of the state capital and is a popular attraction for Schwerin residents as well as visitors from the surrounding area. The late summer date at the end of August makes the festival a atmospheric conclusion to the warm season in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
From August 26th to 30th, 2026, the Winzerfest, in its 34th edition, will transform the Alter Garten into an open wine market. Winegrowers from Rheinland-Pfalz will present white, rosé, and red wines, sparkling wine, Secco, liqueurs, and non-alcoholic grape juice for five days.
