Medieval Festival at Neustadt-Glewe Castle β A Hands-On Journey into the High Middle Ages
Neustadt-Glewe Castle is one of the oldest surviving castle complexes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania; its origins date back to the 13th century. It is precisely this authentic setting that makes the Burgfest so special: Unlike many medieval markets set up on a green field, this festival takes place in and around a genuine medieval fortress. The event is organized by the town of Neustadt-Glewe, supported by the commitment of numerous volunteers and the local castle association.
The program focuses on the High and Late Middle Ages. Knight camps set up their tents, armories display weapons and armor, and knights compete in powerful contests and action-packed combat demonstrations on the tournament grounds. Visitors don't just experience the Middle Ages as spectators; they can even be knighted themselves if they wish.
A large falconry camp with falcons, eagles, owls, Harris hawks, and sighthounds is one of the highlights β featuring flight demonstrations that involve the audience. On the medieval market, traders offer their wares, and traditional craftspeople demonstrate their skills. Children can try their hand at blacksmithing, soap making, basket weaving, weaving, spinning, dyeing, and other ancient techniques.
Three stages provide a varied program of handmade music, medieval dances, jesters, fire performances, and entertainment β including the Kiepenkasper. For younger guests, there are hand-cranked carousels, climbing structures, crossbow and archery, axe and knife throwing, henna art, face painting, and a historical water playground.
With its 33rd edition in 2026, the Burgfest looks back on a long tradition. It is one of the largest and most popular medieval festivals in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district and throughout Western Mecklenburg β a family festival that makes history tangible and puts Neustadt-Glewe in the spotlight for a weekend each year.
From Friday, May 29, to Sunday, May 31, 2026, Neustadt-Glewe Castle will once again be the stage for the High and Late Middle Ages. The festival opens on Friday at 4 PM and runs until midnight, on Saturday from 10 AM to midnight, and on Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.
