Traditional marksmen's festival of one of Germany's oldest marksmen's guilds with king's shoot and family festival
The Schützengilde Ebstorf v. 1289 e.V. is one of the oldest documented marksmen's associations in Germany. Its history dates back to the late 13th century when the citizens of Klosterflecken Ebstorf joined forces for mutual defense and practice shooting. Over the centuries, the defensive citizens' militia evolved into a traditional club that keeps customs alive to this day. The annual marksmen's festival is its central highlight.
Traditionally, the focus is on the king's shoot, where marksmen determine the new king from among their ranks. Whoever takes the decisive shot reigns as marksmen's king for one year—an office with historical roots, associated with royal dinners, royal beer, and festive events. The proclamation is one of the most emotional moments of the festival and is announced in the festival tent to the cheers of club members and guests.
The marksmen's festival has always been a family event. In addition to the competitions for adult marksmen, there is a program for children and young people: children's marksmen's king, games, carousels, and candy stalls. The festival tent provides refreshments with marksmen's beer, bratwurst, and North German specialties. Dance evenings with live bands or DJs bring generations onto the dance floor.
A parade with a marching band, marksmen's clubs from neighboring towns, and guest clubs winds through the streets of the Klosterflecken. Traditional costumes, flags, king's chains, and historical insignia are presented—a colorful spectacle that connects generations. The local population lines the streets and celebrates the marksmen.
The official conclusion takes place on the following Monday, July 6, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., with the traditional 'Resteverzehr' and prize distribution. The winners of the shooting competitions are honored, the results announced, and the festival concludes in a convivial gathering. It is a quieter meeting where club members reflect among themselves and plan for the coming year.
