Three weeks of Heimatfestkirmes with a historical city procession, the 80th grand Heimatfest parade, and fireworks on August 21 to September 8, 2026
The Schwelmer Heimatfest is one of the most important and traditional city festivals in the Bergisches Land region. In 2026, the city celebrates its 80th Heimatfest parade — a historical anniversary that spans a three-week festival program. The Schwelm Neighborhood Associations — comparable to shooting guilds, but organized as district clubs — are the driving forces behind the festival. Around 200,000 visitors are expected for the Kirmes.
The Kirmes, with about 160 showmen, is a massive Volksfest. Rides, stalls, food vendors, and toy sellers fill Schwelm's city center from September 4 to 8. Approx. 200,000 visitors are expected — one of the largest city festivals in the Ennepe-Ruhr district. Opening hours: daily from 2 PM, opening evening on Friday from 5 PM by the mayor.
Schwelm has traditional Neighborhood Associations — civic organizations that historically emerged in the individual city districts. Unlike shooting fraternities, they are not religious organizations but secular district guilds. Their most important function is the Heimatfest: every year in late summer, Neighborhood Associations compete in the city procession and the Heimatfest parade — a living piece of urban culture.
Sunday, September 6, 2026, is the visual highlight: the 80th Grand Heimatfest Parade. Starting at 1 PM, Neighborhood Associations, brass bands, decorated floats, and walking groups will parade from Ochsenkamp through the city center. Thousands of people line the route. It is the largest parade in the Bergisches Land region.
The traditional fireworks display on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 10:30 PM concludes the Heimatfest. It is one of the most beautiful fireworks displays on the Westphalian event calendar — visible from many points in Schwelm and the southern Ennepe-Ruhr district.
Schwelm, with around 30,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the Ennepe-Ruhr district in the southern Ruhr area — strictly speaking, already in the Bergisches Land region. The historic old town with Christuskirche and old burgher houses defines the cityscape. During the Heimatfest, it transforms into a single festival calendar.
The Schwelmer Heimatfest 2026 celebrates its 80th anniversary with a particularly elaborate three-week program. The Schwelm Neighborhood Associations — Schwelm's traditional district guilds — are organizing it together with the City of Schwelm. The highlight is the main Kirmes week from September 4–8, featuring the opening by Mayor Stephan Langhard, the 80th grand Heimatfest parade on Sunday, and the traditional fireworks display on Tuesday evening.
Current program: schwelmer-nachbarschaften.de.
Admission to the Kirmes is free. Rides and food at festival prices. Festival evening at Leo-Theater requires tickets.
Train: Schwelm station on the RB47 / RE line between Hagen and Wuppertal — approx. 5 min walk to the festival area. Car: A1 exit Schwelm-Süd or Schwelm-Nord.
Friday, September 4, from 5 PM (opening by Mayor Langhard); Saturday–Monday daily from 2 PM to approx. 11 PM (Monday slightly earlier); Tuesday, September 8, until midnight (with fireworks).
