Advent Market in the Historic Old Town

The Schwelmer Weihnachtsmarkt is the traditional Advent event of the small Westphalian town of Schwelm in the Ennepe-Ruhr district. With its approximately 25 Christmas huts in the pedestrian zone and along Kirchstraße, it is one of the most beautiful small Christmas markets in the region.

Date and Opening Hours 2026

The 3rd Advent weekend, i.e., December 10th to 13th, 2026:

• Thursday 10.12.: 5:00 PM–8:00 PM (Market opening)
• Friday 11.12.: 11:00 AM–8:00 PM
• Saturday 12.12.: 11:00 AM–8:00 PM
• Sunday 13.12.: 11:00 AM–8:00 PM

Location: Pedestrian Zone and Kirchstraße

The huts are spread across the Schwelm pedestrian zone and the adjacent Kirchstraße — both historically characterized city center sections with half-timbered facades and old houses. The city's Christmas lights transform the market into a particularly atmospheric setting in the evening.

Approximately 25 Christmas Huts

The approximately 25 huts offer a wide range:

• Mulled wine, punch, and non-alcoholic hot drinks
• Bratwurst, potato pancakes with apple sauce, crêpes, candied almonds
• Sweets — cookies, stollen, chocolate specialties
• Handmade gifts — wooden figures, jewelry, ceramics, textiles
• Local clubs and schools with donation stands for charitable purposes
• Christmas decorations — stars, candles, Advent arrangements

Stage Program

Several evenings feature a varied stage program on the central market stage — choirs, the church community's brass band, dance groups, smaller bands, performances by Schwelm schools and clubs. The program will be announced shortly before the market by Stadtmarketing Schwelm.

Sunday Shopping

On Sunday, December 13th, 2026, there will be Sunday shopping in Schwelm to coincide with the Christmas market — the shops in the city center will open their doors for Advent shoppers, easily combined with mulled wine and a stroll through the market.

Schwelm

Schwelm, with around 28,000 inhabitants, is a medium-sized town in the Ennepe-Ruhr district, in the southern Ruhr area at the transition to the Bergisches Land. Despite its proximity to Wuppertal, Hagen, and Wetter, the town has retained its own identity. The Christmas market on the 3rd Advent is the highlight of Schwelm's event calendar in winter.
