Christmas Season in the Baltic Sea Resort of Glowe

Unlike the large open-air Christmas markets in Stralsund, Greifswald, or Putbus on Rügen, the Glowe Advent market takes place indoors — in the Ostseehalle, a multi-purpose hall in the town center. This has a practical reason: the north wind, which can blow fiercely on Rügen in November, as well as rain showers, make a classic open-air market risky. Inside the hall, the market is weatherproof and can be enjoyed in a relaxed manner by older visitors and families with small children.

What Makes the Market Special

The concept combines typical Christmas market elements with a hall atmosphere:

• Exhibitor Market: Regional artisans, potters, jewelry designers, knitted woolens, homemade jams and sea buckthorn products, Christmas decorations
• Christmas Creative Workshop for Children: Crafting Christmas cards, Advent candles, small gifts — free hands-on activity
• Stage Program: Musical performances by regional choirs, brass ensembles, children's groups — typical pre-Christmas music
• Culinary Delights: Bratwurst, fresh waffles, mulled wine, children's punch, coffee and cake

Atmosphere and Significance

The Advent market is one of the few pre-Christmas highlights in the otherwise rather quiet November in Glowe. Beach visitors are rare at this time of year; island residents and day-trippers from the surrounding area come to jointly usher in the Christmas season. Families from Glowe, Bobbin, and the surrounding communities arrange to meet, and the stage performance by the local children's choir is often a fixed part of the program.

Organizers

The organizer is the municipality of Ostseebad Glowe in cooperation with local associations. The market takes place every year on a Saturday in late November or early December — usually the week before or on the first Advent.
