A cappella concert by the Dresden Kreuzchor for Pritzwalk's 770th anniversary
The Dresden Kreuzchor is one of the oldest and most significant boys' choirs in the world. Its roots date back to the 13th century; it has been performing continuously at the Dresden Kreuzkirche ever since. Today, the choir comprises around 130 Kruzianer aged 8 to 18, who live and study at the Kreuzgymnasium boarding school.
On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 7:30 PM, the Dresden Kreuzchor will perform at St. Nikolai Church, Pritzwalk. Around 70 Kruzianer, led by Kreuzkantor Martin Lehmann, will sing a demanding a cappella program. St. Nikolai Church – a late Gothic brick church from the 14th century – offers the ideal setting with its generous dimensions and perfect acoustics.
The program showcases the full stylistic range of the Kreuzchor – from the early Baroque tradition of Heinrich Schütz (himself a long-time Kapellmeister in Dresden) to the sound world of the Baltic composer Sisask.
The concert also marks a special occasion for the Abiturienten (graduates) of the Kreuzgymnasium: for the oldest Kruzianer, it is the last time they will perform as choir members after 12 years. The city of Pritzwalk thus marks the end of a chapter in the lives of these young artists – a moving moment, especially for the families.
The concert is part of the festivities for the city of Pritzwalk's 770th anniversary – Pritzwalk turns 770 years old in 2026. The city is celebrating with numerous events throughout the year; the Dresden Kreuzchor concert is one of the musical highlights.
