770 Years of Pritzwalk — City Anniversary 2026
Pritzwalk, a small town with around 11,000 inhabitants in the Prignitz district in northwestern Brandenburg, was first mentioned in a document on July 23, 1256. In 2026, the town will celebrate its 770th anniversary. The entire year is filled with twelve monthly themed event formats — one of which is the Pritzwalker Herbstlichter on September 4.
770 Lights in the Grüngürtel
The Pritzwalker Herbstlichter are a special staging for the 770th anniversary: In the town's Grüngürtel — the green district with parks and city garden areas — 770 lights will be installed. The number is programmatic: one light for each year since the first mention. Light installations by various artists will be spread across the area, and the town hall will be illuminated in festive colours.
Photo Exhibition City Anniversaries
An accompanying photo exhibition shows Pritzwalk's historical city anniversaries — photographic documentation of past celebrations, city history in black and white and colour. Associations and crafts will present themselves with stands and contributions; the local association landscape (sports clubs, cultural associations, heritage societies, craft guilds) is programmatically integrated.
770-Year Celebration — Annual Programme
The Pritzwalker Herbstlichter are one event in a long series of festivities: January Opening church service. June Main festival parade on Saturday, June 13. July Concert with the Dresdner Kreuzchor. September Herbstlichter on September 4. December Historical Christmas market. All events are marked by the distinctive green logo with a wolf — the city's symbol.
In the Prignitz District
Pritzwalk is located in the Prignitz district — one of the sparsely populated and at the same time most scenically rich districts of the state of Brandenburg. The region is characterised by a wide, hilly landscape with rivers, forests, and small historic towns. Pritzwalk sees itself as the cultural centre of this rural region — and with its 770th anniversary, as a historically significant place in the Mark Brandenburg.
