Traditional Schützenfest of the St. Josef Brotherhood 1865 in the Münster district of Gelmer around Corpus Christi
Gelmer is located in the east of Münster, on the edge of the city area towards Telgte and Münsterland. With approximately 3,200 inhabitants, Gelmer is a small district with a village character — St. Josef Church, Heidestadion as the club grounds, embedded in the Münsterland park landscape. In this environment, a distinct Schützen culture flourishes: the Schützenbruderschaft St. Josef Gelmer 1865 e.V. has been the central player for 161 years and hosts the parish Schützenfest every year.
The brotherhood was founded in 1865 — making it one of the oldest shooting associations in the city of Münster. It preserves Catholic shooting traditions in their original form: linked to the parish, with patron saint St. Josef, including pilgrimages (Telgte) and church attendance as integral parts of the program. Lead-up to 2026: Pilgrimage to Telgte on May 3rd, Flag Rally on May 19th.
The 2026 festival runs from Thursday, June 4th (Corpus Christi) to Saturday, June 6th. The first day begins with the Corpus Christi procession and the festive mass, followed by the children's Schützenfest in the afternoon and the adults' bird shooting, with a tent party in the evening at the Heidestadion. Friday: Frühschoppen in the festival tent. Saturday: Festive mass at St. Josef, proclamation of the new king and queen and insignia bearers, and in the evening, the King's Ball with dancing and celebration.
The Heidestadion is Gelmer's central club facility: shooting range, festival meadow, and festival tent. Both the shooting competitions and the evening festivities take place here. The atmosphere is familiar — Gelmer is a district where most people know each other, and the Schützenfest is the communal highlight of the year.
The children's Schützenfest on Thursday afternoon is a deliberate investment in the future. Children shoot at age-appropriate bird targets, the children's king and queen are crowned, with games and stalls on the festival grounds — an accessible version of the tradition for the younger generation.
Münster is one of the cities in Germany with the most Schützen associations. Almost every district — Gelmer, Pötterhoek, Sprakel, Wolbeck, Albachten, Roxel — has its own brotherhood with its own Schützenfest. The series of district Schützenfeste runs throughout the summer. The St. Josef Brotherhood Gelmer opens the 2026 season; on June 27th, the neighboring Schützenfest St. Hubertus Pötterhoek follows.
As with all traditional parish Schützenfeste, admission to the festival is free. Anyone who wants to experience the tradition is welcome to come — residents of other Münster districts, guests from Telgte and Münsterland, visitors from the surrounding area.
Three festive days around Corpus Christi, celebrating Münster's district tradition linked to the parish and shooting culture. From the morning service to the late-night King's Ball — a classic parish Schützenfest choreography at the Gelmer Heidestadion.
