Polo, Picnic, and a Beach Club in the Heart of Münsterland

The Polopicknick Münster is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's youngest and most glamorous sporting events. Since its premiere in 2011, the format has transformed the Poloplatz at Hugerlandshof in the Handorf district into an open-air beach club with real polo, picnic blankets on the lawn, champagne receptions, DJs, and a relaxed festival atmosphere. The 16th edition will take place on Saturday, July 25th, and Sunday, July 26th, 2026.

High-Level Polo

At the heart of the sporting action are the polo matches: Four teams from the German and European polo circuit compete against each other in several chukkers (7.5-minute playing periods). The level of play is demanding, but the atmosphere is consistently relaxed: Between chukkers, spectators themselves walk onto the field to stomp down the turf divots („divot stomping") — an English polo tradition that has become a participatory ritual in Münster.

The Picnic Concept

Unlike traditional polo tournaments, there is no grandstand for the general public. Instead, families and groups of friends spread out their own picnic blankets at the edge of the field, set up folding chairs, cool boxes, and parasols — and enjoy the spectacle in the style of an English summer. The organizers explicitly encourage bringing your own food and drinks. Those who prefer more convenience can purchase items on-site from food trucks, at the champagne bar, or in the beach club.

Charity and Social Engagement

The Polopicknick is a charity event: A portion of the proceeds goes each year to various regional non-profit projects (children's hospices, children's hospitals, educational projects). Thus, the event combines lifestyle with social responsibility — which has firmly anchored it in Münster's society.

VIP Areas and Boxes

For those who love comfort: There are VIP boxes directly at the edge of the field with champagne, catering, and shade. Hospitality packages for companies and private clients can be booked via Ticketmaster and the organizer's website. The dress code is "Summer Chic": light summer dresses, straw hats, polo shirts, loafers.

Beach Club Feel and DJs

In addition to the polo matches, there is a beach club area with sand, loungers, a cocktail bar, and DJs playing house, lounge, and Latin music. The event extends into the evening here — many visitors stay until after sunset.

Münster-Handorf — The Idyllic Polo Area

The Handorf district is located northeast of Münster, on the Werse river, nestled in the rural Münsterland. The Poloplatz at Hugerlandshof is a private facility with a lawn, riding hall, and stables — one of the few full-scale polo facilities in Germany. This makes Münster one of the centers of German polo.
