Schützenfest Klein Reken 2026 — Münsterland Tradition in August

From August 15th to 17th, 2026, the Allgemeine Bürgerschützenverein Klein Reken e.V. will celebrate its Schützenfest on the festival grounds in the Klein Reken district. As is traditional, the festival takes place on the third weekend of August. In Münsterland, Schützenfeste are not a fringe phenomenon but a constitutive element of village and community life — and the Klein Reken Schützenverein is one of the central pillars of this tradition in the municipality of Reken.

Program — Kaiser Shooting as the Highlight

Schützenfeste in the region follow an established pattern, which the Klein Reken club also maintains:

• Friday — March and Kaiser Shooting on the festival grounds. The marksmen march to the festival grounds in uniform with rifles and shoot for the Schützenkaiser (a special tradition among the kings of recent years).
• Saturday — Kaiser and Coronation Ball with a live band in the Schützenhalle, including a senior citizens' breakfast and a parade in the afternoon.
• Sunday — Grand Parade with all former kings and queens, followed by a throne ball with a band.

The Tradition of Kaiser Shooting

The Kaiserschießen (Kaiser shooting) sets the Klein Reken Schützenfest apart from the everyday format: in this special competition, former kings of the club compete against each other — and the winner is appointed Schützenkaiser (Shooting Emperor). This tradition is held every few years in many Münsterland clubs and lends the Schützenfest a special flair.

Reken — the Municipality in Western Münsterland

The municipality of Reken is located in the Borken district on the western edge of Münsterland, within sight of the Bocholt Volksfest and the Westmünsterland Heath. With its approximately 15,000 inhabitants, the municipality is spread across four districts: Bahnhof Reken, Klein Reken, Groß Reken, and Maria Veen. Each district maintains its own traditions — and the Klein Reken Schützenfest is the most important event highlight in the district's annual calendar. Reken lies directly on a tributary of the Lippe River and on the edge of the Hohe Mark, the highest nature park area in northern Münsterland.

Münsterland Schützenfest Culture

The Münsterland is one of the most intense Schützenfest regions in Germany — almost every municipality, almost every district maintains its own shooting traditions, often dating back to the 17th or 18th century. Here, Schützenvereine are not just hobby clubs but social institutions: they structure social life, organize carnival parades, maintain the festival grounds, and often operate the local Schützenhalle. A Schützenfest weekend is a community event where an entire village celebrates together.
